Since our last update on the music for the upcoming adventure sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, we have learned more information about Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack for the film. The music is being recorded this week in Los Angeles and one of the featured musicians that joined the production’s team is jazz trumpet player Arturo Sandoval. Sandoval is no stranger to film music, having previously worked on the soundtrack for Mambo Kings and having scored a few projects himself, including the Award-winning TV drama For Love and Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story starring Andy Garcia. Sandoval has won an Emmy Award for his original score for the film. He also previously worked with Hans Zimmer on this year’s animated feature Rango, which has lead to their second collaboration on the fourth Pirates movie. Sandoval joins Rodrigo y Garcia in the film’s team of musicians as reported earlier this year. Also involved in Rob Marshall’s movie is composer and conductor Eric Whitacre who has co-written one of the film’s new themes according to his blog.

Weekly Film Music Roundup (March 18, 2011)
Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
The sci-fi comedy Paul is directed Greg Mottola and stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader and Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul. The film’s original score is composed by David Arnold. A soundtrack release including Arnold’s score, as well as several songs from the movie has already been released in Europe as reported here. The album is scheduled to come out on April 4, 2011 in the US.
Also opening today is Brad Furman’s legal thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, John Leguizamo, Ryan Phillippe and William H. Macy. Lakeshore Records has released two different soundtracks including Cliff Martinez’ original score, as well as a song album. Visit our previous article for details on both albums. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Battle: Los Angeles starring Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena and Michelle Rodriquez and directed by Jonathan Liebesman is expected to be the number one movie of the weekend at the domestic box office. The film’s music is written by Brian Tyler. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album with Tyler’s score (click here to check out our announcement of the soundtrack). Also opening today is Simon Wells’ Mars Needs Moms from Walt Disney Pictures. The film marks John Powell’s first out of four scores for animated movies to be released this year. Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Gore Verbinski’s animated movie Rango starring Johnny Depp features music by Hans Zimmer. Visit our previous article announcing the soundtrack album to find out more. The soundtrack is now available to download at Amazon and iTunes and will be released on CD on March 15. Also opening is George Nolfi’s The Adjustment Bureau starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt The film’s score is written by Thomas Newman who also collaborated on a song for the movie with Richard Ashcroft. George Fenton in Concert
Last weekend, George Fenton performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for the first part in the orchestra’s Masters of Film Music series. Selections from Fenton’s scores including Dangerous Liaisons, Ever After and Anna and the King were performed and Andy Tennant, director and long time collaborator of Fenton (most recently on The Bounty Hunter, Fool’s Gold and Hitch) was providing guest narration. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross win Oscar for ‘The Social Network’
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have won the Oscar for their original score for David Fincher’s The Social Network. The award marks the first Oscar win for both composers, who both have been nominated for the first time. The score beat out Alexandre Desplat’s The King’s Speech, Hans Zimmer’s Incpetion, John Powell’s How to Train Your Dragon and A.R. Rahman’s 127 Hours.
In the Best Song category, Randy Newman won the Oscar for his original song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3.
All nominated composers were spotted in attendance at the Academy Award ceremony.

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
The action movie Drive Angry 3D directed by Patrick Lussier and starring Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard features music by Michael Wandmacher. A soundtrack album featuring the original score is now available on iTunes and will be released on CD on March 8 by Lakeshore Records. Also opening wide this weekend is the comedy Hall Pass. The film is directed by the Farrelly Brothers and stars Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Christina Applegate, Jenna Fisher and Richard Jenkins. The movie centers on a married man, who is granted the opportunity to have an affair by his wife. Hall Pass features a number of songs, but no original score (even though a cue named Card Sting written by Mike Post for the TV show Law & Order is used several times during the film). No plans for a soundtrack release have been announced.
William Ross to conduct this year’s Oscar ceremony
According to The Hollywood Reporter, William Ross will be conducting the 83rd Academy Awards this Sunday. He previously conducted the 79th Oscars back in 2007. Ross is most well known as a conductor and orchestrator for such composers as Alan Silvestri and John Powell. Ross has also written numerous feature scores, including The Tale of Desperaux, Ladder 49, Tin Cup and My Dog Skip. Check out our previous article on Ross’ upcoming projects.

Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
The teen sci-fi action movie I Am Number Four directed by D.J. Caruso and starring Alex Pettyfer, Dianne Agron, Timothy Olyphant and Teresa Palmer features a score by Trevor Rabin, as well as many songs from such artists as Beck, Kings of Leons and The Black Keys. No soundtrack album has been announced for the Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg-produced movie. There is about 45 minutes of Rabin’s score in the film, which would make a soundtrack release a definite possibility. Check back on this site if an announcement will be made.
Also opening is the mystery thriller Unknown directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Liam Neeson, January Jones, Diane Kruger, Frank Langella and Aidan Quinn. The music for the Joel Silver-produced movie is written by John Ottman and Alexander Rudd. ‘Rango’ Soundtrack Preview
Paramount Pictures has revealed a new clip from the upcoming animated movie Rango directed by Gore Verbinski. The clip features Hans Zimmer’s orchestral arrangement of the Rango theme song by Los Lobos that was previewed a few weeks ago on the Los Angeles Times Music Blog.
