Last night, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), held its annual Film & TV Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Mychael Danna was honored with the Richard Kirk Award, which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. The composer whose film scoring credits include last year’s Life of Pi, for which he received his first Academy Award, as well as Moneyball, Girl Interrupted, Little Miss Sunshine, (500) Days of Summer and The Sweet Hereafter was presented the award by the night’s hosts, BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer-Ross. Several of Danna’s regular collaborators congratulated him via a tribute video, including Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil), Atom Egoyan (Exotica, Chloe), Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair) and Bennett Miller (Capote). Mychael Danna to Receive BMI’s Richard Kirk Award
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) has announced today that Mychael Danna will be honored with the Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The composer who is recognized for his evocative blending of non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music received his first Academy Awardin 2013 for his score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and was also nominated for the original song Pi’s Lullaby. Danna started his film scoring career with Atom Egoyan and composed the music for all of the director’s films since 1987, including such titles as The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica and Felicia’s Journey. The composer also collaborated multiple times with directors including Bennett Miller (Moneyball, Capote, Foxcatcher), Terry Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Tideland), Billy Ray (Breach, Shattered Glass) and Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair).
Cliff Martinez Receives BMI’s Richard Kirk Award

Cliff Martinez was honored with the Richard Kirk Award, which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. The composer whose film scoring credits include ten films directed by Steven Soderbergh, including Sex, Lies & Videotapes, Traffic, Solaris and Contagion, as well as such movies as Drive, The Lincoln Lawyer, Arbitrage and The Company You Keep was presented the award by the night’s hosts, BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer-Ross. Several of Martinez’s friends and collaborators congratulated him via a tribute video, including Soderbergh, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers) and Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive and the composer’s most recent project Only God Forgives.
Cliff Martinez to Receive BMI’s Richard Kirk Award
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) has announced today that Cliff Martinez will be honored with the Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The Grammy-nominated composer will be the first recipient of the award who is also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Martinez started out in bands including Captain Beefheart, The Weirdos, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Dickies before scoring his first movie, Sex, Lies, and Videotape directed by Steven Soderbergh. He went on to collaborate with the director multiples times on such films as Kafka, The Limey, Traffic, Solaris and Contagion. The composer’s other film scoring credits include Drive (for which he received a Broadcast Film Critics Award nomination), Arbitrage, The Lincoln Lawyer, Narc, Wicker Park and Wonderland. He has recently scored two movies currently playing in theaters: Robert Redford’s The Company You Keepand Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers (co-composed with Skrillex). He also wrote the music for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives starring Ryan Gosling, which is set to be released in the US on July 19, 2013.

This past Wednesday, Rolfe Kent has received the Richard Kirk Award at the BMI Film and TV Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The award is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. Rolfe Kent to Receive BMI’s Richard Kirk Award
Rolfe Kent is the recipient of the Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The Emmy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated composer has previously received 13 BMI Film & Television Awards since 2002. Kent’s best known work includes his score for Alexander Payne’s Election, About Schmidt and Sideways, as well as Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking and Up in the Air. He also composed the main titles for the Showtime hit drama Dexter, which earned him an Emmy nomination. Among his other credits are the hit comedies Wedding Crashers, Legally Blonde, Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. Kent most recently scored last year’s family film Mr. Popper’s Penguins and the critic favorite Young Adult. Next up for the composer is the crime comedy Gambit directed by Michael Hoffman and starring Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz.
David Arnold to Receive Richard Kirk Award at BMI Film & Television Awards
David Arnold is the recipient of the Richard Kirk Award for career achievment at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The Grammy-winning composer (Independence Day) has previously received 10 BMI film music awards. Arnold is best known as the composer of the last five James Bond movies, as well as for his music for Roland Emmerich’s Stargate, Independence Day and Godzilla. The composer has also worked multiple times with directors John Singleton (Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Michael Apted (Enough, Amazing Grace) and Roger Michell (Changing Lanes) and is coming off of a busy year, in which he scored four feature films (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Morning Glory, Made in Dagenham and Paul).
