Zacarias M. de la Riva (Automata, The Kill Team, Tad the Explorer, Bent) has shared a new behind-the-scenes look at the creation of his score for the Spanish Netflix original film Below Zero (Bajocero). The video features an interview with the composer talking about his musical approach for the thriller, the composing process and the challenges of recording his music during the first national lockdown in Spain last year, as well as footage from the orchestral recording sessions with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, which he supervised remotely from his studio in Madrid. Behind the Scenes of Kenneth Lampl’s & Kirsten Axelholm’s Score for ‘2067’
RLJE Films & Milan Records have published a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the music for the sci-fi thriller 2067 starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Ryan Kwanten. Kenneth Lampl (Frontera, Dark, The One) and Kirsten Axelholm (The Furies) have teamed up to compose the score for the film. Check out the video featurette, which includes interviews with Lampl and writer/director Seth Larney, footage from the recording sessions and a performance of the score’s main theme by Lampl, after the jump. Milan Records has released the official soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score earlier this month.
Jeff Russo’s ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Main Theme Preview
CBS has published a behind-the-scenes video featuring the main theme from Star Trek: Discovery. The video features footage of Emmy Award-winning composer Jeff Russo (Fargo, Legion, The Night Of, Snowfall, Power) recording his theme with a 60-piece orchestra, as well as interviews with Russo himself and co-creator/executive producer Alex Kurtzman. The show starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, James Frain, Michelle Yeoh and Anthony Rapp is set a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and follows the crew of the USS Discovery during the Federation-Klingon cold war.
NBC’s ‘Great News’ to Feature Music by Jeff Richmond & Giancarlo Vulcano
Jeff Richmond and Giancarlo Vulcano are scoring the new NBC comedy Great News. The show is created by Tracey Wigfield (The Mindy Project) and stars Briga Heelan, Andrea Martin, Adam Campbell, Nicole Richie, Horatio Sanz and John Michael Higgins. The series follows a New Jersey mom who puts her relationship with daughter to the test when she lands an internship at her new job. Wigfield is also executive producing the Universal Television production with Tina Fey, Robert Carlock & Jack Burditt (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, 30 Rock) and David Miner (Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine).
Behind the Score of ‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’
Sony Pictures Animation has published a video featurette about the music for the studio’s animated feature Smurfs: The Lost Village. The video features composer Christopher Lennertz (Sausage Party, Horrible Bosses, Ride Along, Identity Thief) and director Kelly Asbury talking about their work on the project, as well as footage from the scoring sessions at Abbey Road Studios in London. Behind the Music of ‘Hidden Figures’
20th Century Fox has published a video featurette on the music for Theodore Melfi’s drama Hidden Figures. The 3-minute piece features interviews with composers Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams and Benjamin Wallfisch, as well as jazz legend and pianist Herbie Hancock who is featured as a soloist on the score. Also shown is footage from a live performance of Williams’ original songs at the Toronto Film Festival and video from the scoring sessions at the Alfred Newman Scoring Stage on the Fox lot. Lionsgate has published a video featurette on the music for Damien Chazelle’s movie musical La La Land. The video features interviews with the director and composer Justin Hurwitz who talk about their collaboration and their work on the project, as well as footage from the orchestral score’s recording sessions. Netflix has published a video featurette on the music for Marvel’s upcoming series Luke Cage. The video features interviews with composers Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker, actor Mike Colter, as well as A$AP Ferg and Method Man who talk about how each episode is shaped by its score and musical influence. Luke Cage starring Colter, Mahershala Ali, Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, Frank Whaley and Sônia Braga follows Cage as he becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City after a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin.

WaterTower Music has published a video featurette about the score for the sports drama Creed. The video features interviews with the film’s composer Ludwig Goransson, director Ryan Coogler, editor Michael Shawver, co-writer Aaron Covington, as well as Goransson’s family. The composer who also appears in the movie in two scenes as a member of Tessa Thompson’s character’s band talks about his musical background, his collaboration with the director and the influence of Bill Conti’s classic Rocky score. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has published its latest episode in the digital documentary-style video series, Academy Originals, which examines everything from the creative process, to the moments that changed the course of filmmaking, to the artists who are charting its future. The newest episode in the Creative Sparks series features an interview with composer Theodore Shapiro (The Devils Wears Prada, Tropic Thunder, Marley & Me) who discusses his creative process and where his ideas come from.
