Premiering tomorrow, May 30, is the History event mini-series Roots directed by Phillip Noyce, Thomas Carter, Mario Van Peebles and Bruce Beresford and starring Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, Chad L. Coleman, Erica Tazel, Derek Luke, Malachi Kirby and Regé-Jean. The 4-parter’s original music is composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, 11.22.63). Philip Miller (Catch a Fire) has co-scored the Noyce-directed first episode. Questlove (Top Five) serves as the executive music producer on the project. Weekly TV Music Roundup (February 15, 2015)
Premiering tomorrow, February 16, is the BET mini-series The Book of Negroes directed by Clement Virgo and starring Aunjanue Ellis, Cuba Gooding Jr., Louis Gossett Jr., Lyriq Bent, Jane Alexander, Ben Chaplin, Allan Hawco and Greg Bryk. Philip Miller (Catch a Fire, The Girl, Mary and Martha) has composed the project’s original music. The 3-parter is based on the novel by Lawrence Hill and tells the story of Aminata Diallo after her capture and the pain she endured as part of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Premiering tomorrow, April 15 is the new sci-fi series Defiance created by Rockne S. O’Bannon (Farscape) and starring Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, Graham Greene, Mia Kirshner and Fionnula Flanagan. Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead) is composing the show’s score. It has been announced this past week that the composer’s new label Sparks & Shadows will release a soundtrack album later this year. A soundtrack for the crossover MMO video game is already available. Defiance is set in a post-apocalyptic future St. Louis after a lengthy war on Earth between humans and a consortium of invading alien races has completely transformed the surface of the planet. A couple of new TV shows are premiering this week:
Premiering on October 16 is the CW drama Emily Owens, M.D. created by Jennie Snyder Urman (Something Borrowed) and starring Mamie Gummer, Justin Hartley, Michael Rady, Aja Naomi King, Kelly McCreary and Necar Zadegan. The show’s score is composed by Jim Dooley (Pushing Daisies, When a Stranger Calls). The series follows a newly minted doctor looking for a fresh start in the adult professional world, who discovers that life at the hospital where she works is no different than high school. Philip Miller Scoring ‘The Girl’
Philip Miller is scoring the upcoming drama The Girl. The film is directed by Julian Jarrold and stars Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren who starred in the filmmaker’s The Birds and Marnie. The movie chronicles the obsessive relationship the director had with the actress. Also starring are Imelda Staunton as Alma Hitchcock and Penelope Wilton as Peggy Robertson, Hitchcock’s loyal assistant. Gwyneth Hughes (Miss Austen Regrets) has written the screenplay for the BBC Two production and Amanda Jenks (An Englishman in New York) is producing the project. HBO Films is co-producing the TV drama. Jarrold has previously collaborated with composer Adrian Johnston on his previous four features, including Becoming Jane, Brideshead Revisited and Kinky Boots. Miller’s best known previous credit is Phillip Noyce’s 2006 drama Catch a Fire starring Tim Robbins and Derek Luke. The Girl is expected to air later this year on BBC Two.
Weekly Film Music Roundup (April 22, 2011)
Three new movies are opening wide this Easter weekend:
The period drama Water for Elephants directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz and Hal Holbrook features music by James Newton Howard. A soundtrack album including the original score, as well as a couple of songs from the film has been released by Sony Masterworks. Also opening wide is Tyler Perry’s comedy Madea’s Big Happy Family starring Perry himself, as well as Loretta Devine and Bow Wow. The film’s score is by Aaron Zigman as announced earlier this year. While Tyler Perry’s movies usually get a soundtrack album, no release has been announced so far.
