David Arnold is the recipient of the Richard Kirk Award for career achievment at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The Grammy-winning composer (Independence Day) has previously received 10 BMI film music awards. Arnold is best known as the composer of the last five James Bond movies, as well as for his music for Roland Emmerich’s Stargate, Independence Day and Godzilla. The composer has also worked multiple times with directors John Singleton (Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Michael Apted (Enough, Amazing Grace) and Roger Michell (Changing Lanes) and is coming off of a busy year, in which he scored four feature films (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Morning Glory, Made in Dagenham and Paul).

Steve Jablonsky and Linkin Park Collaborating on ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’
Linkin Park announced on their official website (via ComingSoon.net) that they have once again teamed up with composer Steve Jablonsky for the music of the upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The band’s new single Iridescent will be featured as the end credits song in the sequel. The track is a fresh take of the song, which originally appeared on Linkin Park’s current album A Thousand Suns. The band previously contributed the songs What I’ve Done and New Divide for the previous Transformers movies, with the latter also being included in Steve Jablonsky’s score for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Linkin Park also published a new video about the film’s music, which you can watch after the jump. In the video, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Steve Jablonsky talk about their collaboration and the placement of Iridescent in the film.
Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ Ad with Music by Clint Mansell
Darren Aronofsky recently directed an ad for the Yves Saint Laurent men’s fragrance La Nuit de L’Homme. His regular composer Clint Mansell has written the music for the commercial, which has now surfaced online. Aronofsky has worked with other previous collaborators on the project, including actor Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) and writers Ari Handel (The Fountain) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan, The Wrestler). The ad campaign for the product has been launched in Europe and is set to hit the US in a couple of months. Cannes 2011 Film Music Preview
With the line-up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival announced this past week, we’re going to take a look at a couple of films set to premiere at the festival that haven’t been covered yet on this page. We already reported about three films that are competing at the festival taking place from May 11 to May 22. Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life with music by Alexandre Desplat already has a soundtrack scheduled to come out next month a couple days before the film’s domestic opening. Also, Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin That I Inhabit (La Piel que habito) features music by Alberto Iglesias and is set for a release this fall by Sony Pictures Classics. And the indie drama We Need to Talk About Kevin starring Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly and scored by Jonny Greenwood is still awaiting a domestic release date.
Weekly Film Music Roundup (April 15, 2011)
Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Scream 4 reunites director Wes Craven with composer Marco Beltrami. Two different soundtracks have been released for the horror sequel. A score album featuring Beltrami’s music will be released next Tuesday and a song soundtrack with two score tracks is available on Lakeshore Records. Also opening is the animated feature Rio, which already opened in several foreign territories last weekend generating the highest grossing international opening of the year. The film’s score is by John Powell and Sergio Mendes served as the movie’s executive music producer. Rio‘s music team also includes percussionist Carlinhos Brown, lyricist Siedah Garrett, pop singer Taio Cruz and The Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am. A score album will be released next week by Varese Sarabande and the official soundtrack featuring the film’s songs is already out on Interscope Records.
‘Who Are the Roma?’ (Music by Hans Zimmer)
Hans Zimmer has written the music for the public awareness short film Who Are the Roma?. The film was produced by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in honor of the 40th anniversary of International Roma Day and to celebrate the culture and achievements of the Roma people, commonly called “gypsies”. Zimmer’s music features Aleksey Igudesman on solo violin. Igudesman previously performed on Zimmer’s score for Sherlock Holmes and he is also co-scoring the upcoming documentary Jealous of the Birds with Zimmer. Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
The comedy Arthur directed by Jason Winer and starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner and Greta Gerwig features music by Theodore Shapiro. A soundtrack with songs from the movie has been released earlier this week by WaterTower Music. No word on a release of Shapiro’s score. Also coming out this week is the family drama Soul Surfer starring AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt. The film’s score is by Marco Beltrami and has been released by Madison Gate Records as reported here. The album can be downloaded on iTunes. A separate soundtrack with songs from the film has been released by Rhino Records this Tuesday.

Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Duncan Jones’ Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga features music by Chris Bacon. A soundtrack including Bacon’s original score has been released by Lakeshore Records as reported here. The album is now available to order on Amazon and can be downloaded at Amazon and iTunes. Bacon has been giving a number of interviews about his latest project. Check out Scorenotes, Film Music Media and Filmmuziek.be for audio interviews with the composer.
Also opening wide is Tim Hill’s Hop starring Russell Brand as the voice of the Easter Bunny, as well as James Marsden, Elizabeth Perkins, Kaley Cuoco and Hugh Laurie. The film’s music is by composer Christopher Lennertz. As reported last week, a soundtrack with Lennertz’ score will be released by Varese Sarabande on April 19. Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch starring Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino and Jon Hamm features music by Tyler Bates and Marius DeVries. A soundtrack with songs from the movie has been released this week by Watertower Music. To listen to audio clips and download the album, visit Amazon and iTunes. Bates and DeVries were also heavily involved in arranging the film’s songs. For an article discussing the film’s music with quotes from both composers, visit Rolling Stone. Also check out our previous article to find more about the project. No announcement has been made if any of the score from the film will be released.
Also opening wide is the family comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules starring Zachary Gordon, Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn. The film’s music is composed by Edward Shearmur (visit our article on the scoring assignment). No soundtrack release has been announced. Theodore Shapiro’s score for the first part was released a couple of months after the film’s release, which makes it seem possible that a soundtrack release for the sequel will be coming out later this year.
