Four new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Expecting to enjoy the biggest box office debut of the year so far is the action sequel Fast Five. The film’s music is composed by Brian Tyler. Check out our news entry from yesterday for a video interview with Tyler and recording sessions footage from the project. A score album will be released next Tuesday by Varese Sarabande and is already available on iTunes and a song album with three score cues is coming out on ABCKO Records.

Also opening wide is the teen comedy Prom directed by Joe Nussbaum. The film’s score is by Deborah Lurie. As reported earlier this month, a soundtrack with songs from the movie has been released by Hollywood Records, but none of Lurie’s original score is included.

Deborah Lurie Scoring ‘Footloose’

Deborah Lurie is writing the score for the upcoming remake of Footloose. The film is directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) and stars Kenny Wormaid, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid and Andie MacDowell. The movie is a remake of the 1984 hit film directed by Herbert Ross and starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest. Miles Goodman served as the music adaptor on the original film. The remake is said to focus more on the drama of the original movie about a city kid who moves to a conservative town where dancing and rock music has been banned and less on elaborate musical numbers of the Footloose stage adaptation.

Deborah Lurie scoring ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’

Deborah Lurie is currently recording the score for the upcoming music documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. The movie follows Justin Bieber with some footage of performances from his 2010 concert tour and will be released in 3D early next year. Also appearing in the film is Miley Cyrus and Jaden Smith. The documentary is directed by Jon Chu who directed this year’s Step Up 3D and 2008’s Step Up 2: The Streets, where he worked with composers Bear McCreary and Aaron Zigman. He recently uploaded a short video from the recording sessions of the score on Twitter, which can be watched here. Deborah Lurie to score ‘Prom’

Film Music Reporter has learned that Deborah Lurie is set to score the upcoming teen comedy Prom. In the movie, a group of teenagers get ready for their high school prom as several intersecting stories unfold as the big dance approaches. The movie starring Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights) is directed by Joe Nussbaum, who previously worked with Lurie on the features Sleepover and Sydney White. Lurie is no stranger to teen movies and recently scored this year’s hit teen romance Dear John starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried.
