It was announced today that Nicholas Britell will team up with with dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied to score the upcoming musical drama Carmen. The film is inspired by French composer Georges Bizet’s opera and centers on a woman who travels from the deserts of Mexico to Los Angeles in search of freedom. No casting announcements have been made yet. Dimitri Rassam (The Little Prince, Upside Down) and Helen Estabrook (Whiplash, Casual) are producing the project.

Alexandre Desplat, Nicholas Britell, Benjamin Wallfisch & Justin Hurwitz to Participate in Film Music Roundtable Discussion
A number of film composer will participate in Gold Derby’s first roundtable discussion event focussing on the music and sound of some of this year’s awards contenders in the respective categories. The Meet the Experts panel will be moderated by Tom O’Neill and will take place tomorrow, November 16 at Landmark Theaters in Los Angeles. Participating composers include Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The King’s Speech) who is promoting his work for Illumination Entertainment’s hit animated movie The Secret Life of Pets, Nicholas Britell (The Big Short, Free State of Jones) whose most recent score is for the indie hit drama Moonlight, Benjamin Wallfisch (Lights Out, The Escapist) who co-scored Ted Melfi’s upcoming Hidden Figures with Hans Zimmer & Pharrell Williams and Justin Hurwitz (Whiplash) who scored and wrote the songs for Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed movie musical La La Land.
Nicholas Britell to Score Jonathan Dayton’s and Valerie Faris’ ‘Battle of the Sexes’
Nicholas Britell is currently scoring the upcoming drama Battle of the Sexes. The film is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine, Ruby Sparks) and stars Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Elisabeth Shue, Andrea Riseborough, Austin Stowell, Alan Cumming, Sarah Silverman and Bill Pullman. The movie tells the true story of the competition between tennis pros Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973 when the No. 2 ranked King beat the 55-year-old retired former Wimbledon champion Riggs. Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty, 127 Hours) wrote the screenplay. Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, Steve Jobs) is producing the project with Christian Colson (Selma, 127 Hours).
Nicholas Britell to Score Gary Ross’ ‘Ocean’s 8’
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Nicholas Britell is set to compose the music for the upcoming heist comedy drama Ocean’s 8. The film is directed by Gary Ross (Pleasantville, The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit) and stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter. The movie is a spin-off of Steven Soderbergh’s Oceans trilogy, which was scored by David Holmes, and follows eight women who plan and execute a heist in New York. Ross also co-wrote the screenplay with Olivia Milch (Dude). Soderbergh (Traffic, Sex, Lies and Videotapes, Erin Brockovich) is producing the project with Jon Kilik (Foxcatcher, 25th Hour, Babel).

Opening in most theaters is the action thriller Jack Reacher: Never Go Back directed by Edward Zwick and starring Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge, Danika Yarosh, Patrick Heusinger, Holt McCallany and Robert Knepper. The film’s original music is composed by Henry Jackman (Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: First Class, Big Hero 6, Captain Phillips). ‘Moonlight’ Soundtrack Announced
Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack album for the drama Moonlight. The album features the film’s original music composed by Nicholas Britell (The Big Short, Free State of Jones, A Tale of Love and Darkness). Also included are songs by Goodie Mob, Boris Gardiner, Barbara Lewis and a piece by Mozart as featured in the movie. The soundtrack will be released digitally on October 21, 2016 and physically on November 25. Visit Amazon to pre-order the CD. A vinyl release is also in the works. Moonlight is written and directed by Barry Jenkins and stars Naomie Harris, Andre Holland, Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monae, Alex R. The movie tells the story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality.

The film’s original music is composed by Dario Marianelli (Atonement, The Boxtrolls, Pride and Prejudice, V for Vendetta) has composed the film’s original music. Warner Bros. War Dogs follows two friends in their early 20s during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Nicholas Britell is composing the original music for the upcoming drama Moonlight. The film is written and directed by Barry Jenkins and stars Naomie Harris, Andre Holland, Mahershala Al, Janelle Monae, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes, Alex R. Hibbert, Jaden Piner and Jharrel Jerome. The movie is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell McCraney and follows a young man who comes of age during “War on Drugs”-era Miami as he battles a deteriorating home life and deals with his dawning sexuality. Adele Romanski (Black Rock, Bad Milo, The Freebie) is producing the project with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.

‘Free State of Jones’ Soundtrack Details
Sony Masterworks will release the official soundtrack album for the historical drama Free State of Jones. The album features the film’s original music composed by Nicholas Britell (The Big Short, A Tale of Love and Darkness). Also included is the original song I’m Crying by Lucinda Williams. The soundtrack will be released on June 24, 2016 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Free State of Jones is directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) and stars Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali and Keri Russell. The movie is set during the Civil War and tells the true story of defiant Southern farmer Newt Knight and his armed rebellion against the Confederacy.
