Wendy & Lisa, Steven Price, Bear McCreary & Dave Porter Honored at ASCAP Film & TV Music Awards

Last night, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) held its annual Film & Television Music Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman received the inaugural ASCAP Shirley Walker Award, which honors those whose achievements have contributed to the diversity of film and television music. The composer duo, known for their work on such features as Dangerous Minds and Just Wright and TV shows including Heroes, Nurse Jackie and Touch, were presented the award by music supervisor Liza Richardson. Hans Zimmer congratulated the Emmy Award-winning composers via a video message.

Steven Price, Steve Jablonsky, Stanley Clarke & Pharrell Williams Invited to Join the Academy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 271 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Among the invited artists this year a number of film composers, including Steven Price (The World’s End, Attack the Block) who received his first Academy Award this year for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, Steve Jablonsky who is best known for his collaborations with Michael Bay, including the Transformers movies, as well as films such as Ender’s Game, Battleship and Gangster Squad, Stanley Clarke who scored such movies as Passenger 57, The Best Man Holiday and Boyz N the Hood and Buck Sanders (Warm Bodies) who received an Oscar nomination for The Hurt Locker.

‘The Giver’ to Feature Original Song by OneRepublic

The upcoming film adaptation of The Giver will feature an original song by OneRepublic. The Grammy Award-nominated rock pop band, best known for such songs as Apologize, Stop and Stare and Counting Stars, is recording the original track Ordinary Human for the movie directed by Phillip Noyce and starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgard, Taylor Swift, Cameron Monaghan, Odeya Rush, Emma Tremblay and Katie Holmes. As previously reported, Marco Beltrami (World War Z, The Wolverine, Scream) is providing the film’s original score. The sci-fi drama based on the bestselling novel by Lois Lowry will be released nationwide on August 15, 2014 by the Weinstein Company.

Academy Announces Updated Campaign Regulations Affecting the Music Category

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a number of updated regulations for how companies and individuals may market movies and achievements eligible for the 87th Academy Awards to Academy members, including significant changes that affect the music category. The regulations state that “music branch members may not contact other Music Branch members to promote the nomination of their own song in any way, including via mail, email, telephone or social media”. In addition, “music branch members may not attend any special live performances of eligible songs unless attached to a screening”. Click here for the complete award campaign regulations.

Alexandre Desplat to Head Venice Film Festival Jury

It was announced today that Alexandre Desplat has been named president of the International Jury for the Competition section of the 71st Venice International Film Festival, which will run from August 27 to September 6. It marks the first time that a film composer has been chosen to head the jury, which comprise nine members and decide on the winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film and other awards. Desplat is known for his collaborations with directors Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life), Roman Polanski (The Ghost Writer), George Clooney (The Monuments Men) among many others. He received six Academy Award nominations for such films as The Queen, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, The King’s Speech, Argo and Philomena.

Two new movies are opening in wide release:

Opening in most theaters is the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Jersey Boys directed by Clint Eastwood and starring John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza and Christopher Walken. Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film and the musical written by Bob Gaudio and featuring lyrics by Bob Crewe, as well as original recordings by Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel Think Like a Man Too directed by Tim Story and starring Kevin Hart, Regina Hall, Taraji P. Henson, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Gabrielle Union, La La Anthony, Meagan Good, Terrence J, Adam Brody, Wendi McLendon-Covey and David Walton. Epic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from and inspired by the film by Mary J. Blige. Check out our previous article for the full album details. Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, Ride Along, Revolution) has composed the film’s original score. A score album featuring the composer’s music is set to be released by Varese Sarabande.

BMI Continues to Support Sundance Institute

Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) will continue its support for Sundance Institute’s Film Music Program, which collaborates with Skywalker Sound to host the Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Labs at Skywalker Sound. The first 2014 session of the lab begins July 8 at Skywalker Ranch and provides an opportunity for composers and directors to explore the collaborative process of writing music for feature film. At the Lab, fellows work with a variety of Creative Advisors, including film composers, sound designers, filmmakers and film industry professionals. The program aims to give composers first-hand experience working on film music and sound design, and to give directors insight into the process as well.

Ennio Morricone to Receive Star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame

The Walk of Fame Selection Committee announced today that Ennio Morricone is among the 30 honorees to receive a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2015. He was selected to receive a star for his live performances on stage. The Italian composer who is known for such scores as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Untouchables and The Mission will be one of roughly a dozen film composers receiving the honor. Previous honorees include Elmer Bernstein, Alfred Newman, Bill Conti, Maurice Jarre, Henry Mancini, Max Steiner, Victor Young, Les Baxter, Ernest Gold, Alan Menken, Randy Newman and Hans Zimmer.
