Yesterday afternoon, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Academy Award-nominated composers and songwriters in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song category at the Cafe La Boheme in West Hollywood. Following a speech by Academy Music Branch Governor Charles Bernstein, SCL president Ashley Irwin introduced the nominees who briefly spoke to the audience. Three of the four nominated composers in the score category were in attendance, including Alexandre Desplat, nominated for the seventh and eight time for his scores for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game, who talked about his experience as one of the industry’s top composers over the last decade and finding his own musical voice, while keeping his integrity.

Gregg Alexander & Antonio Sanchez to Perform at Hollywood Music in Media Awards
The Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMAs) announced the performers today for the 5th Annual HMMAs. Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer Gregg Alexander will perform the original song Lost Stars from this year’s comedy drama Begin Again, which is performed in the film by Adam Levine and Keira Knightley. It will mark the former New Radicals frontman’s first live performance in 15 years. In addition, Antonio Sanchez will open the awards show with a special drum performance from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman live to a scene from the film. Finally, Gwendolyn Sadford, Brandon Jay and Scott Doherty will perform their original music from Jenji Kohan’s Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black.

Guaranteed to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi action adventure Transformers: Age of Extinction directed by Michael Bay and starring Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz, Sophia Myles, Bingbing Li, Titus Welliver and TJ Miller. The film’s original music is composed by Steve Jablonsky (Ender’s Game, Battleship) who previously scored Bay’s last five features, including the previous three Transformers movies. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score is expected to be announced soon. Imagine Dragons have written the original song Battle Cry for the film, which is now available to download as a single here. ‘Begin Again’ Soundtrack Announced
Adam Levine’s label 222 Records has announced a partnership with Interscope Records to release the official soundtrack album for the comedy drama Begin Again. The album features the songs from the film co-written by Gregg Alexander, Danielle Brisebois, Nick Lashley, Nick Southwood, Rick Nowels, John Carney and Glen Hansard and performed by the film’s cast. The soundtrack will be released on July 1, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Begin Again written and directed by John Carney (Once) stars Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Adam Levine, Hailee Steinfeld, James Corden, Ceelo Green and Catherine Keener. The movie follows a songwriter who comes to the States with her singer boyfriend, only to catch him philandering with a record company executive. The dramedy produced by Anthony Bregman, Tobin Armbrust and Judd Apatow premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and will be released in select theaters on June 27, 2014 by the Weinstein Company.
