The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) has named Academy Award-nominated songwriter Diane Warren and composer Thomas Newman as the newest SCL Ambassadors. The SCL Ambassador Program was established to revere the elite group of screen composers, lyricists and songwriters whose contributions have made a significant impact in music for film, television, and video games. The talent showcased by these individuals has set the standard for music in visual media and they are leading representatives of their craft. SCL honored Ambassadors include James Newton Howard, Dave Grusin, The Sherman Brothers, Elliot Goldenthal, Lalo Schifrin, Hal David, Burt Bacharach, Leiber and Stoller, Mark Isham and Randy Newman.

Academy Award-Nominated Composers & Songwriters Celebrated at SCL Reception
Yesterday afternoon, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Oscar-nominated composers and songwriters in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song category, which was held for the second time in a row at Cafe La Boheme in West Hollywood. SCL president Ashley Irwin introduced the nominees who briefly addressed the audience. Four of the five nominated composers in the score category were in attendance, including John Williams, who received his 50th Academy Award nomination for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He thanked the Academy music branch and the other nominees and jokingly singled out Ennio Morricone as an “inspiration to us younger composers.” Morricone, who received his sixth Oscar nomination for his score for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, also briefly spoke to the audience.

Among the composers in the Outstanding Music Composition for a Series category present at the event were previous Emmy winners Jeff Beal who received his fourth Emmy nomination this year for his music for Netflix’s House of Cards and his fifteenth nomination overall, as Bear McCreary who received his first nomination for Starz’s Outlander and his fourth nomination within the past six years.

Tonight, the SCL (Society of Composers & Lyricists) will be hosting the composer panel Composing Combos. The event will feature a conversation with Jeff Russo (Fargo, Power, CSI: Cyber) & cellist Zoë Keating who have co-scored the first season of A&E’s The Returned, as well as James Levine (Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story) & Jim Dooley (Pushing Daisies, Obsessed) who are co-scoring the TNT hit series The Last Ship. Both combos will discuss the unique process of combining creative visions while working together to score television shows.

Yesterday afternoon, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Academy Award-nominated composers and songwriters in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song category at the Cafe La Boheme in West Hollywood. Following a speech by Academy Music Branch Governor Charles Bernstein, SCL president Ashley Irwin introduced the nominees who briefly spoke to the audience. Three of the four nominated composers in the score category were in attendance, including Alexandre Desplat, nominated for the seventh and eight time for his scores for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game, who talked about his experience as one of the industry’s top composers over the last decade and finding his own musical voice, while keeping his integrity.

SCL president Ashley Irwin, as well as Television Academy music peer group governors Ian Fraser and Michael A. Levine introduced the nominees who briefly spoke to the audience. Among the composers in the Outstanding Music Composition for a Series category present at the event were Ramin Djawadi who was Emmy-nominated before for Prison Break and Fast Forward and received his first nomination this year for his score for HBO’s Game of Thrones, as well as previous Emmy winner Jeff Beal who received his third nomination for his music from Netflix’s House of Cards after being nominated twice last year for both his score and his main title theme from the show.

All six nominated composers in the score category were in attendance, including Alexandre Desplat, nominated for the sixth time for his score for Stephen Frears’ Philomena, who talked about the first Oscar concert this past week and thanked Academy governors Charles Fox and Arthur Hamilton for putting together the event. William Butler and Owen Pallett, nominated for the first time for their music from Her, were joined at the reception by Arcade Fire members Win Butler and Régine Chassagne and the film’s director Spike Jonze.
SCL Selects Ashley Irwin as New President
The board of the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) unanimously elected Emmy-winning composer Ashley Irwin as President for the 2013-2015 term. The Australian composer has been a board member since 2008 and has served on the Performing Rights Committee and as the Chairman of the Seminar Committee for the last four years. He succeeds TV composer Dan Foliart (7th Heaven, The Secret Life of the American Teenager) in the office who is stepping down after 10 years of service. Irwin is best known for his collaborations with Bill Conti on numerous Oscar shows and such features as Rocky Balboa, as well as his work with Clint Eastwood on films including J. Edgar and Hereafter.

This afternoon, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Academy Award-nominated composers and songwriters in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song category at the home of composer John Cacavas in Beverly Hills. All five nominated composers in the score category attended the event: John Williams (Lincoln), Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina), Alexandre Desplat (Argo), Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) and Thomas Newman (Skyfall). Among the attendants in the Best Original Song category were J. Ralph (nominated for the song Before My Time from Chasing Ice), Claude-Michel Schonberg, Herbert Kretzmer & Alain Boublil (nominated for the original song Suddenly from Les Miserables), Mychael Danna and Bombay Jayashri (who received a nomination for Pi’s Lullaby from Life of Pi), Walter Murphy (nominated for the song Everybody Needs a Best Friend from Ted with Seth MacFarlane) and Paul Epworth (nominated for the title song of Skyfall with Adele).
