Premiering on Tuesday, March 15, is the HBO documentary Phoenix Rising directed by Amy Berg about actress Evan Rachel Wood’s recent efforts as an activist pushing for an extension of the statute of limitations for domestic violence cases and the coalition she builds at The Phoenix Act. The film’s original music is composed by Aska Matsumiya (Bruised, Betty, I’m Your Woman, Skate Kitchen, Selah and the Spades). Check out our previous news article to learn more about the documentary, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival will debut in two parts on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

Premiering on Thursday, March 17, is the Netflix original film Rescued by Ruby directed by Katt Shea and starring Grant Gustin, Scott Wolf, Kaylah Zander, Camille Sullivan, Tom McBeath, Sharon Taylor and Eileen Pedde. Joy Ngiaw (Blush, June & Kopi, Short Circuit: Jing Hua) has composed the movie’s original music. Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the superhero movie The Batman co-written and directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, Peter Sarsgaard, Jayme Lawson and Colin Farrell. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost, Jurassic World, Star Trek, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Milan Records will release a soundtrack album for the sci-fi drama After Yang. The album features the film’s original score composed by Aska Matsumiya (Bruised, Skate Kitchen, Betty, I’m Your Woman, Selah and the Spades, 37 Seconds), as well as an original theme written by Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Last Emperor, The Revenant, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Little Buddha). The soundtrack will be released digitally this Friday, March 4 and will be available to stream/download here. After Yang is written and directed by Kogonada and stars Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Justin H. Min, Sarita Choudhury, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Clifton Collins Jr. and Haley Lu Richardson. The movie is based on Alexander Weinstein’s short story Saying Goodbye to Yang and tells the story of a father and daughter as they try to save the life of their robotic family member.

Aska Matsumiya Scoring Amy Berg’s ‘Phoenix Rising’

Earlier this month, Aska Matsumiya (Skate Kitchen, Bruised, I’m Your Woman, Betty, Selah and the Spades) has recorded her score for the upcoming documentary Phoenix Rising. The film is directed by Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil, West of Memphis, The Case Against Adnan Syed) and follows actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood and the coalition she builds at The Phoenix Act, tracking the political and community focus the actor has established in the aftermath of her experience and trauma as a domestic violence survivor. Berg is also producing the project with Grace Sin, Lesley Goldman and Katie Doering.

Aska Matsumiya (Skate Kitchen, I’m Your Woman, Selah and the Spades, 37 Seconds) has composed a new score for the upcoming sports drama Bruised. The film marks the feature directorial of Halle Berry who also stars in the movie, alongside Adan Canto, Sheila Atim, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Shamier Anderson. The drama follows a former MMA fighter struggling to regain custody of her son and restart her athletic career. Michelle Rosenfarb wrote the screenplay.

‘Betty’ Season 2 Soundtrack Album Released

Milan Records has released a new soundtrack album for the HBO original series Betty. The album features selections of the original music from the show’s second season composed by Aska Matsumiya (I’m Your Woman, Skate Kitchen, After Yang, Selah and the Spades). The soundtrack is now available to stream/download here, where you can also check out audio samples. The label has previously released an album featuring the composer’s score from Season 1 last year. Betty is created and directed by Crystal Moselle based on her 2018 feature Skate Kitchen and stars Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell and Rachelle Vinberg.

Sakamoto has contributed the film’s theme, which has been released as part of the composer’s vinyl box set 2020S earlier this year. Matsumiya has composed the score for the movie written and directed by Kogonada (Columbus) and starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Justin Min, Sarita Choudhury, Haley Lu Richardson and Clifton Jones, Jr.. The drama is based on the short story Saying Goodbye to Yang by Alexander Weinstein and tells the story of a father and daughter as they try to save the life of their robotic family member.

Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album for the crime drama I’m Your Woman. The album features the film’s original music composed by Aska Matsumiya (Skate Kitchen, Selah & the Spades, Betty, 37 Seconds). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, December 11 and will be available to stream/download here. I’m Your Woman is written and directed by Julia Hart and stars Rachel Brosnahan, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Arinzé Kene, Frankie Faison and Bill Heck. The movie is set in the 1970s and revolves around a woman who is forced to go on the run after her husband betrays his partners, sending her and her baby on a dangerous journey.
