Michael Penn (Girls, Boogie Nights, Masters of Sex) has previously been announced to compose music for the film and is credited as the project’s executive music producer and for providing additional music to the teen comedy drama co-written and directed by Julia Hart and starring Grace VanderWaal, Judy Greer, Elijah Richardson, Tyrel Jackson Williams, Nija Okoru, Al Madrigal, Judd Hirsch and Uma Thurman.

THR is reporting that Michael Penn (Girls, Boogie Nights, Masters of Sex, Sunshine Cleaning, The Last Kiss) is set to compose and perform original music for a sequel to last year’s Disney+ original movie Stargirl. He will also serve as the executive music producer on the film, which will be directed by Julia Hart (I’m Your Woman, Fast Color) and star Grace VanderWaal and Elijah Richardson. VanderWaal is also contributing new songs to the YA drama, which follows Stargirl’s journey out of Mica and into a bigger world of music, dreams and possibility. Hart is also co-writing the screenplay with Jordan Horowitz.

The film is directed by Julia Hart (Stargirl, Miss Julie, Fast Color) and stars Rachel Brosnahan, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Arinzé Kene, Bill Heck, Frankie Faison, Marceline Hugot and James McMenamin. The movie is set in the 1970s and follows a woman whose escape from a toxic marriage leads her to form an unlikely partnership with another couple.
