The line-up of the composer panel Behind the Music with CW3PR: Crime, Death and Resurrection at Comic-Con has been announced. The sixth edition of the event will feature a number of film and television composers discussing their work and will also feature surprise sneak peeks from upcoming projects, followed by a fan-led Q&A with exclusive giveaways. Panelists at this year’s panelists include two recent first-time Emmy nominees: Jeff Russo (Hostages) who was nominated for his music for FX’s Fargo and James Levine (Glee, Major Crimes, Nip/Tuck) who received the honor for his music on FX’s American Horror Story. Other participants include Golden Globe nominee Christopher Young (Spider-Man 3, Deliver Us from Evil), Steve Jablonsky (Transformers series, Ender’s Game), Daniel Licht (Dexter, The Red Road) and Brian Reitzell (Hannibal, 30 Days of Night).

Weekly Film Music Roundup (July 4, 2014)
Three new movies opened nationwide this past Wednesday:
Opening in most theaters is the comedy Tammy directed by Ben Falcone and starring Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Allison Janney, Gary Cole, Mark Duplass, Dan Aykroyd, Kathy Bates, Toni Collette and Nat Faxon. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Andrews (Donnie Darko, Bridesmaids, The Heat). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as two songs by Possum Creek earlier this week. Also opening wide is the family sci-fi adventure Earth to Echo directed by Dave Green and starring Teo Halm, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Reese Hartwig and Ella Linnea Wahlested. Joseph Trapanese (Oblivion, The Raid, Tron: Uprising) has composed the film’s original music. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack featuring the composer’s score, as well as the song Worlds Away performed by Dia Frampton. Weekly TV Music Roundup (June 15, 2014)
Premiering tonight in the U.S. is the BBC mini-series The Escape Artist created and written by David Wolstencroft and starring David Tennant, Toby Kebbell, Sophie Okonedo and Ashley Jensen. The drama’s music is composed by Nicholas Hooper (Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince). The two-parter about a talented junior barrister who specializes in spiriting people out of tight legal corners will air as part of PBS’ Masterpiece series tonight and on June 22. Syfy’s ‘Dominion’ to Feature Music by Christopher Young and Jeff Rona
Christopher Young has composed the music for the pilot of the new Syfy original series Dominion. Jeff Rona is currently scoring the other episodes of the first season of the show created by Scott Stewart and starring Christopher Egan, Tom Wisdom, Roxanne McKee, Alan Dale, Anthony Stewart Head and Luke Allen-Gale. The supernatural action drama is based on characters from Stewart’s 2010 film Legion and is set 25 years after the events of the movie and picking up in the aftermath of a catastrophic war between an army of angels and mankind that has transformed the world.
Hollywood Composers Discuss Music for Action Movies at Newport Beach Film Festival
This past Sunday, the Newport Beach Film Festival Seminar Series presented the composer panel Lights, Camera, Action – Music for Action Films (and other genres). Tim Greiving moderated a panel of film composers who – challenged with the on-screen fights and explosions – offered insight into how the score works in harmony with the film’s visual elements, sound effects and getting all the elements to co-exist. Participating composers included Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Hangover) who discussed the challenges of scoring this summer’s Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise. Christopher Young (Spider-Man 3, Entrapment) talked about his music for this year’s Chinese martial arts action movie The Monkey King, which became one the nation’s highest grossing film at the local box office.

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action movie Need for Speed directed by Scott Waugh and starring Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Scott Mescudi, Ramon Rodriguez, Michael Keaton, Rami Malek, Dakota Johnson and Harrison Gilbertson. Interscope Records has released a soundtrack featuring the original song Hero by Kid Cudi feat. Skylar Grey, two new songs by Aloe Blacc and more. Click here for the full details. Also opening wide is the comedy Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club written, directed and produced by Perry who also stars in the film alongside Nia Long, Amy Smart, Cocoa Brown, Terry Crews, William Levy and Wendi McLendon-Covey. Christopher Young (Spider-Man 3, The Shipping News, Sinister) who previously scored Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas for the filmmaker has composed the film’s original score. No word on a soundtrack album. The comedy follows a group of single mothers from different walks of life bond who create a support group after an incident at their children’s school. ‘The Monkey King’ to Feature Music by Christopher Young
Christopher Young has composed the music for the upcoming fantasy action adventure The Monkey King. The film is directed by Pou-Soi Cheang (Dog Bite Dog, Accident) and stars Donnie Yen in the title role, alongside, Aaron Kwok, Chow Yun-Fat, Peter Ho, Kelly Chen and Joe Chen. The movie is based on selected chapters of Wu Cheng’en’s novel Journey to the West and tells the story of how the Monkey King rebels against the Jade Emperor of Heaven. Edmond Wong (Ip Man) has adapted the material for the screen and Agan (Don Quixote) is producing the Mandarin Films and Filmko Pictures production. The Monkey King will be released in China, Hong Kong and other Asian territories on January 31, 2014. A release in the U.S. later in 2014 is expected.

The film’s original music is composed by Howard Shore. WaterTower Music has released the composer’s score in two different versions. Christopher Young to Score Scott Derrickson’s ‘Beware the Night’
Director Scott Derrickson has announced on Twitter that he will be reteaming with composer Christopher Young on the upcoming supernatural police thriller Beware the Night. The movie stars Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, Olivia Munn, Joel McHale and Sean Harris. The film follows a New York street cop who has put his faith in religion behind him, but now finds himself targeted by the devil in the form of possessed soldier. Derrickson has co-written the screenplay with Paul Harris Boardman (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Urban Legends: Final Cut). Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean series, National Treasure, The Rock) is producing the project through his production company Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
‘Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas’ and ‘Gods Behaving Badly’ to Feature Music by Christopher Young
Christopher Young has composed the score for the upcoming comedy Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas. The film is written and directed by Perry who also stars in the film alongside Chad Michael Murray, Larry the Cable Guy, Eric Lively, Alicia Witt, Anna Maria Horsford, Tika Sumpter, Eric Lively, Lisa Whelchel, JR Lemon and Kathy Najimy. The movie follows Madea as she gets talked into helping a friend pay her daughter a surprise visit in the country for Christmas. Perry is also producing the film with Ozzie Areu (House of Payne, Good Deeds) and Matt Moore. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas will be released on December 13, 2013 by Lionsgate.
