Composer Grant Fonda’s original score for Jimmy will be available tomorrow, via The Orchard, one week ahead of the film’s nationwide theatrical release on November 6 through Fathom Entertainment. Starring KJ Apa as Jimmy Stewart, the biopic explores the Hollywood legend’s rise to stardom, his service as a combat pilot over Nazi-occupied Europe, and his difficult return home before making It’s a Wonderful Life.
For Fonda, telling Stewart’s story through music carries a personal resonance. As the great-great-grandnephew of Henry Fonda, Stewart’s lifelong friend and fellow screen icon, he brings a family connection to a film exploring the man behind the beloved public persona.
“Jimmy Stewart’s story gave me the opportunity to emotionally unite the person audiences knew on screen and the man navigating extraordinary experiences away from it,” says Fonda. “I wanted the music to capture both the legacy of Jimmy’s identity as an everyman and his enduring persistence of character across Hollywood and fighting in the war. The friendship he shared with Henry Fonda was a tremendous inspiration for me as joy, hope, and sincerity are key parts of the score’s emotional DNA.”
Fonda’s score follows Stewart across sharply contrasting worlds, capturing the glamour and ambition of Golden Age Hollywood, the harrowing intensity of combat, and the emotional uncertainty of coming home. Alongside the original score, Fonda created anew arrangement of “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” recorded at Bandrika Studios with Los Angeles session musicians.
Track: Make Us Proud, Jim, reflection from composer Grant Fonda:
“As we send Jimmy off to war, the orchestra soars on variations of his theme. The score quickly shifts to a darker and more intense variation of our main material as we join the ranks in WWII air combat. WWII period-era percussion played by the composer lays the rhythmic background for Hollywood’s finest string and brass players.”
