On Saturday, April 25, the 16th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival will host The Art of Music in Visual Media panel during the festival’s Seminar Series. The participating composers include Marco Beltrami (Fantastic Four, World War Z, 3:10 to Yuma, The Wolverine), Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, 300, Watchmen, John Wick, Dawn of the Dead), Matthew Margeson (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass 2, Scouts vs. Zombies), Ryan Shore (Prime, Numb, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever) and Jason T. Miller (The Odd Couple, ‘Til Death, Out of Practice). Jon Burlingame is moderating the panel, which will feature the composers sharing their insights on what it takes to develop their scores and elevate their stories.

Hollywood Composers Discuss Music for Action Movies at Newport Beach Film Festival
This past Sunday, the Newport Beach Film Festival Seminar Series presented the composer panel Lights, Camera, Action – Music for Action Films (and other genres). Tim Greiving moderated a panel of film composers who – challenged with the on-screen fights and explosions – offered insight into how the score works in harmony with the film’s visual elements, sound effects and getting all the elements to co-exist. Participating composers included Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Hangover) who discussed the challenges of scoring this summer’s Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise. Christopher Young (Spider-Man 3, Entrapment) talked about his music for this year’s Chinese martial arts action movie The Monkey King, which became one the nation’s highest grossing film at the local box office.

The participating composers include John Ottman (X2, Superman Returns, The Fantastic Four) who recently completed his score for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Hangover) who most recently finished work on the sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise, Christopher Young (Spider-Man 3, Entrapment) who scored this year’s martial arts epic The Monkey King, one of the all-time highest grossing films in China, Marco Beltrami (World War Z, The Wolverine) whose action movie credits in 2014 include the upcoming November Man starring Pierce Brosnan and Stephen Endelman (Home of the Brave) whose most recent feature Rob the Mob is currently playing in select theaters.
