The details of the soundtrack album for the indie drama Fruitvale Station have been revealed. The album features the film’s original score composed by Ludwig Goransson (Community, New Girl, 30 Minutes or Less). Also included are the songs from the film by artists including The Jacka, Cellski, Peezy Mar Keyes, William Peoples, Noah Coogler, Mistah F.A.B., Johnny Ca$h and Phillip Henderson. The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 24, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. A physical version will be coming out on October 22 (click here to order the CD). Check out audio clips after the jump. Fruitvale Station is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Kevin Durand, Ariana Neal and Octavia Spencer. The film tells the true story of Oscar Grant, a young black man detained on New Year’s Day 2009 by the Bay Area Rapid Transit police and shot in the back and killed. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters in July by the Weinstein Company.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Planes directed by Klay Hall and featuring a voice cast including Dane Cook, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cedric the Entertainer, Val Kilmer, John Cleese, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett and Teri Hatcher. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Mancina (Tarzan, Speed Twister). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as original songs by Mark Holman, Chris Classic & Alana D and Jon Stevens of The Dead Daisies. Also opening in wide release is the sci-fi action film Elysium written and directed by Neil Blomkamp and starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, Diego Luna and Carly Pope. The film’s original score is composed by Ryan Amon. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in the US and select international territories is the sci-fi action monster movie Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman. The film’s music is composed by Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, which also features former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and singer Priscilla as soloists. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel Grown Ups 2 directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello and Nick Swardson. The film’s original score is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Over the Hedge, Click, Bee Movie) who previously scored the 2010 original film. No soundtrack album has been announced. BMI Sundance Roundtable Videos
BMI has published several videos from last week’s film composer/director roundtable Music & Film: The Creative Process at the Sundance Film Festival. Participants include composer Terence Blanchard, composer Mark Isham and director George Tillman, Jr. whose drama The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete premiered at the festival, composer Ludwig Goransson and writer/director Ryan Cogler whose feature Fruitvale received the top Sundance honor and was picked up for distribution by The Weinstein Company, composer Rob Simonsen and director James Ponsoldt whose coming of age drama The Spectacular Now was acquired by A24 for a theatrical release (Simonsen also scored the comedy The Way, Way Back, which was picked up by Fox Searchlight as the biggest sale at the festival), composer Abel Korzeniowski and director Randy Moore who worked together on the controversial Disney theme park-set Escape from Tomorrow, composer Dustin O’Halloran who scored the indie drama Breathe In, his second project for Drake Doremus following Like Crazy and composer Craig Wedren and director Jill Solloway who collaborated on the comedy Afternoon Delight.
Theodore Shapiro and Ludwig Göransson Scoring ‘We’re the Millers’
Ludwig Göransson and Theodore Shapiro are co-scoring the upcoming comedy We’re the Millers. The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and stars Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudekis, Emma Roberts, Ed Helms, Will Poulter and Kathryn Hahn. The movie follows a veteran pot dealer who creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico. Tucker Tooley & Vincent Newman (A Man Apart, Felon), Happy Walters and David Heyman (Harry Potter series, I Am Legend) are producing the New Line Cinema production. Shapiro has previously scored the director’s first two features Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and The Mysteries of Pittsburgh.

Only one new network drama is making its series debut this week:
Premiering tonight is the mystery drama 666 Park Avenue created by David Wilcox (Fringe) and starring Rachael Taylor, Dave Annable, Vanessa Williams, Terry O’Quinn, Mercedes Masöhn, Robert Buckley, Helena Mattsson, Erik Palladino and Samantha Logan. The show’s music is composed by Trevor Morris (Immortals, The Borgias, The Tudors). To find out more about the series and the music, check out our previous article. The show about a couple who learns that the Manhattan building complex that they just moved into might be possessed by a mysterious demonic force will be airing every Sunday night on ABC.
Ludwig Göransson to Score ‘Fruitvale’
Ludwig Göransson is scoring the upcoming indie drama Fruitvale. The film marks the feature directing debut of Ryan Coogler. The movie starring Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Durand, Chad Michael Murray, Melonie Diaz, Ahna O’Reilly and Tristan Wilds tells the true story of Oscar Grant, a young black man detained on New Year’s Day 2009 by the Bay Area Rapid Transit police and shot in the back and killed. Coogler has also written the script for the film produced by Forest Whitaker and his Significant Productions partner Nina Yang (The Children of Huang Shi).
Fall 2011 Television Music Roundup (Part 1): FOX
Following our television music series from the summer, Film Music Reporter presents a listing of this fall’s new network dramas and comedies and its composers, as well as the major new cable shows of the season that feature original music. Featured in part 1 are the shows on FOX. Articles for all other networks will be published within the next few weeks.
Currently finishing up its premiere season is the sci-fi adventure show Terra Nova produced by Steven Spielberg and Brannon Braga and starring Jason O’Mara, Stephen Lang, Shelley Conn, Landon Liboiron and Naomi Scott. Brian Tyler is the composer of all 13 episodes of the first season. Two videos from the orchestral recording sessions of the score on the Fox Scoring Stage can be checked out on YouTube (Cycles of Time and Magical Journey). Also check out an interview with the composer about his work on the show on Tracksounds, during which he announced that a score album is in the works.

Four new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters this week is the horror sequel Final Destination 5 directed by Steven Quale and starring Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell, Tony Todd and David Koechner. The film’s score is composed by Brian Tyler who is scoring his second movie in the horror series. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score will be released on August 16 by Varese Sarabande. Already in theaters since Wednesday is the drama The Help directed by Tate Taylor and starring Emma Stone, Allison Janney, Sissy Spacek, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Mike Vogel Jessica Chastain and Cicely Tyson. Thomas Newman has written the score for the movie. Varese Sarabande will release the score on September 13 as reported here. A soundtrack featuring songs from the movie, including Mary J. Blige’s The Living Proof is available on Geffen/Interscope Records (click here for audio clips and more details).
Ludwig Göransson to Score Fox’s ‘New Girl’
Ludwig Göransson is set to score the new Fox comedy show New Girl. The project stars Zooey Deschanel as a girl in her late 20s who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three single guys, played by Jake Johnson (No Strings Attached), Max Greenfield (Ugly Betty) and Lamorne Morris. The show is created by Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached). Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher, Orange County) directed the pilot episode. Peter Chernin (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Katherine Pope (Breakout Kings), Dave Finkel & Brett Baer (30 Rock, United States of Tara) are executive producing alongside Meriwether and Kasdan. New Girl is scheduled to premiere on September 20, 2011 and will be airing every Tuesday night on Fox.
