Ryan Amon has signed on to score the upcoming sci-fi action thriller Chappie. The composer is sharing scoring duties on the project with Chris Clark and Rich Walters who also serves as the music editor on the picture. The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver The movie follows a robot named Chappie who is kidnapped by two criminals and becomes the adopted son of a very strange and dysfunctional family. Sharlto Copley will be lending his voice to the title character. Blomkamp has also co-written the screenplay with Terri Tatchell (District 9). Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Jumper) is producing the Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital (MRC) production. Amon made his major film scoring debut this year with Blomkamp’s Elysium starring Matt Damon.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Planes directed by Klay Hall and featuring a voice cast including Dane Cook, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cedric the Entertainer, Val Kilmer, John Cleese, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett and Teri Hatcher. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Mancina (Tarzan, Speed Twister). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as original songs by Mark Holman, Chris Classic & Alana D and Jon Stevens of The Dead Daisies. The Varèse Sarabande Summer Signing Announced
Continuing the celebration of their 35th Anniversary, Varèse Sarabande Records presents The Varèse Sarabande Summer Signing to take place on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, CA. Composers in attendance include Emmy Award-winning composer Jeff Beal (Rome, Monk, Appaloosa) whose Emmy-nominated score for the Netflix original series House of Cards was released by the label earlier this year, Grammy Award-winning composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Beverly Hills Chihuaha) whose score for The Smurfs 2 was just released by Varese earlier this week and Emmy Award-winning composer Christophe Beck (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Muppets) whose music for The Hangover Trilogy is now available on CD following a digital release earlier this summer. Also participating are composers Laurent Eyquem (Winnie) who recently had his first score released on Varese for Ron Maxwell’s Copperhead and Ryan Amon whose score for Neil Blomkamp’s Elysium is set to be released on August 6, as well as Varèse Sarabande Records producer Robert Townson. The event will take place at Dark Delicacies, located at 3512 W Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM on Sunday August 11, 2013.
