Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Planes directed by Klay Hall and featuring a voice cast including Dane Cook, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cedric the Entertainer, Val Kilmer, John Cleese, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett and Teri Hatcher. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Mancina (Tarzan, Speed Twister). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as original songs by Mark Holman, Chris Classic & Alana D and Jon Stevens of The Dead Daisies. Also opening in wide release is the sci-fi action film Elysium written and directed by Neil Blomkamp and starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, Diego Luna and Carly Pope. The film’s original score is composed by Ryan Amon. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Temporary Residence Ltd will release soundtrack album for David Gordon Green’s indie comedy Prince Avalanche. The album features the film’s original score composed by post-rock instrumentalists Explosions in the Sky (Friday Night Lights) and David Wingo (Mud, Take Shelter) who has previously collaborated with the director on such films as The Sitter, All the Real Girls and George Washington. The soundtrack will be released on August 6, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on 
David Wingo and Jeff McIlwain are reuniting with director David Gordon Green on his latest feature Joe. The Southern drama stars Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan and follows an ex-con who becomes the unlikeliest of role models to a 15-year-old child of a homeless family ruled by a drunk father. Gary Hawkins wrote the screenplay based on the novel of the same title by Larry Brown. Lisa Muskat (Compliance), Gordon Green and Christopher Woodrow (The Immigrant) are producing the project with Derrick Tseng (Palindromes). Wingo and McIlwain previously shared scoring duties on Gordon Green’s Snow Angels and The Sitter, while Wingo also scored the director’s George Washington and All the Real Girls.
