Premiering tonight is the HBO limited series The Sympathizer developed by Park Chan-wook & Don McKellar based on the book of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen and starring Hoa Xuande, Robert Downey Jr., Fred Nguyen Khan, Vy Le, Toan Le, Ky Duyen, Phanxine, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong and Sandra Oh. Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, The Little Drummer Girl, The Handmaiden, Decision to Leave, Thirst) has composed the show’s original music. Check out our previous news article to learn more about the 7-parter, which will air Sundays on HBO and will also be available to stream on Max.

Premiering on Wednesday, April 17, is the Hulu limited series Under the Bridge developed by Quinn Shephard based on the true-crime book of the same title by Rebecca Godfrey and starring Riley Keough, Lily Gladstone, Vritika Gupta, Izzy G., Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Ezra Faroque Khan, Aiyana Goodfellow and Archie Panjabi. The show’s original music is composed by Alex Somers (Captain Fantastic, Honey Boy, Causeway,  Fresh, Aloha, Together, Together, Charm City Kings, Dawson City: Frozen Time). Cho Young-wuk Scoring HBO’s ‘The Sympathizer’

Composer Cho Young-wuk is reuniting with director Park Chan-wook  on the new HBO limited series The Sympathizer. The show is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same title and stars Hoa Xuande, Robert Downey Jr., Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Phanxine, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Alan Trong, Duy Nguyen and Sandra Oh. The 7-parter centers on the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.

Weekly Film Music Roundup (October 14, 2022)

Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend while also premiering on Peacock today is the slasher sequel Halloween Ends directed by David Gordon Green and starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, Rohan Campbell, Kyle Richards and James Jude Courtney. The film’s original music is composed by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter & Daniel Davies (Firestarter) who previously scored 2018’s Halloween and last year’s Halloween Kills. Sacred Bones Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score today. Opening in select theaters today before expanding nationwide over the next couple of weeks is the biographical drama Till directed by Chinonye Chukwu and starring Danielle Deadwyler,  Jalyn Hall, Whoopi Goldberg, Jayme Lawson, Frankie Faison, Tosin Cole and Haley Bennett. Abel Korzeniowski (Penny Dreadful, A Single Man, Nocturnal Animals, The Nun, The Courier) has composed the film’s original score. Mercury Classics will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on October 28. Click here for the full album details and to listen to a first track. ‘Decision to Leave’ Soundtrack Album Released

CJ ENM has released a soundtrack album for the South Korean romantic thriller Decision to Leave. The album features the film’s original music composed by Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, The Handmaiden, The Little Drummer Girl, Lady Vengeance, Thirst) and The Soundtrackings. The soundtrack is now available to stream/download in most international markets. No word yet on a domestic release. Visit the British iTunes/Apple Music and Amazon stores to check out audio samples. Decision to Leave is co-written and directed by Park Chan-wook and stars Tang Wei and Park Hae-il. The movie follows a detective investigating a murder who begins to suspect the dead man’s wife may know more than she initially lets on and finds himself trapped in a web of deception and desire.

Cho Young-wuk Scoring Park Chan-wook’s ‘Decision to Leave’

Composer Cho Young-wuk is reteaming with director Park Chan-wook on the upcoming South Korean drama Decision to Leave. The film starring Tang Wei and Park Hae-il follows a police officer who leads an investigation that occurred in the mountains and meets and falls for the deceased’s wife mysterious wife. Chan-wuk also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeong Seo-kyeong and is producing the Moho Film production.

Opening in theaters nationwide today is the horror thriller Separation directed by William Brent Bell and starring Rupert Friend, Brian Cox, Mamie Gummer, Madeline Brewer, Eric T. Miller, Violet McGraw and Simon Quarterman. The film’s original music is composed by Brett Detar (Brahms: The Boy II, The Devil Inside, Wer). MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Opening semi-wide in a couple of hundred theaters before coming out on VOD on May 21 is the drama Four Good Days directed by Rodrigo García and starring Mila Kunis, Glenn Close and Stephen Root. Edward Shearmur (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Escape at Dannemora, Cruel Intentions, Charlie’s Angels, Johnny English) has composed the film’s original score. No word on a score release. Cho Young-wuk Scoring Zhang Yimou’s ‘Impasse’

Earlier this month, Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, The Little Drummer Girl, Thirst, The Handmaiden) has recorded his score for the upcoming Chinese spy thriller Impasse. The film is directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) and stars Zhang Yi, Yu Hewei, Zhu Yawen, Qin Hailu, Ni Dahong and Liu Haocun. The movie centers on the escape of a group of CCP agents who have obtained proof the Japanese are conducting unethical human experiments. Liwei Pang (Shadow, One Second) is producing the project.

‘The Little Drummer Girl’ Soundtrack to Be Released

Silva Screen Records has announced a soundtrack album for the BBC & AMC limited series The Little Drummer Girl. The album features the show’s original music composed by Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, Thirst, The Handmaiden). The soundtrack will be released digitally on November 6, 2020 and physically the following week. Check back on this page for the streaming/download link and visit Amazon to pre-order the CD version. The Little Drummer Girl is directed by Chan-woon Park and stars Florence Pugh, Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Shannon, Clare Holman, Charles Dance, Kate Sumpter, Simona Brown and Max Irons. The 6-parter is based on John le Carré’s novel of the same title and follows a fiery actress and idealist whose resolve is tested after she meets a mysterious man while on holiday in Greece.

‘Drug King’ Soundtrack Released

Warner Music Korea has released a soundtrack album for the South Korean crime drama Drug King (Mayakwang). The album features the film’s original music composed by Cho Young Wuk (aka Yeong-wook Jo) (The Little Drummer Girl, Oldboy, The Handmaiden, Thirst) & The Soundtrackings. Also included are several classical pieces as featured in the movie newly recorded with the Babelsberg Film Orchestra. The soundtrack is now available to stream here. A CD version will be coming out later this month and is available for pre-order here. Drug King is written and directed by Min-ho Woo and stars Song Kang-Ho, Jo Jung-Suk and Bae Doona.

The show’s original music is composed by Edward Shearmur (Charlie’s Angels, Cruel Intentions, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Johnny English).
