Premiering tonight is the HBO docu-series Allen v. Farrow directed by Kirby Dick & Amy Ziering about the accusation of sexual abuse against Woody Allen involving his 7-year-old daughter with Mia Farrow. The show’s original music is composed by Michael Abels (Get Out, Us, Bad Education, All Day and a Night, See You Yesterday). Premiering in the U.S. tomorrow, February 22, is the HBO Europe original series Beartown (Björnstad) created by Anders Weidemann, Antonia Pyk & Linn Gottfridsson based on the Fredrik Backman’s novel of the same title and starring Ulf Stenberg and Aliette Opheim. Johan Testad (The Sandhamn Murders, Inkognito, Drifters) has composed the show’s original music. Music Super Circus has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last fall when the series premiered in Scandinavia. HBO’s ‘Allen v. Farrow’ to Feature Original Score by Michael Abels

HBO announced today that Michael Abels (Get Out, Us, Bad Education, See You Yesterday) is the composer of the new HBO docu-series Allen v. Farrow. The show is directed by Kirby Dick (The Hunting Ground, The Bleeding Edge) & Amy Ziering (On the Record) and focuses on the accusation of sexual abuse against Woody Allen involving Dylan, his then seven-year-old daughter with Mia Farrow; their subsequent custody trial, the revelation of Allen’s relationship with Farrow’s daughter, Soon-Yi; and the controversial aftermath in the years that followed. The 4-parter interweaves new investigative work with exclusive, in-depth interviews on the subject with Mia, Dylan & Ronan Farrow, family friend Carly Simon, among others.

Premiering in the U.S. tonight is the British mini-series The Long Song created by Andrea Levy, directed by Mahalia Belo and starring Tamara Lawrance, Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden, Jordan Bolger, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Gordon Brown, Ayesha Antoine, Leo Bill, Sir Lenny Henry and Madeleine Mantock. The show’s original music is written by late composer Jonathan Rhys Hill (The Trial of Christine Keeler). The 5-part drama, which centers on an indomitable, young slave who works on a sugarcane plantation with her detestable mistress, premiered in the UK in 2018 on BBC One and is making its domestic debut as part of PBS’ Masterpiece series.

Premiering in the U.S. tomorrow, February 1, is the Scandinavian limited series The Investigation directed by Tobias Lindholm and starring Søren Malling, Pilou Asbæk, Pernilla August, Rolf Lassgård, Laura Christensen, Anders Juul, Henrik Birch, Hans Henrik Clemensen, Dulfi Al-Jabouri and Charlotte Munck. Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen (Before the Frost) has composed the show’s original music. The 6-part drama, which explores the complex real-life investigation surrounding the 2017 murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, one of the most notorious criminal cases in Danish media history, is making its U.S. debut on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

Michael Abels Scoring HBO’s ‘Fake Famous’

Michael Abels (Get Out, Us, Bad Education, See You Yesterday, All Day and a Night) has recently scored the new HBO documentary Fake Famous. The film is directed by Nick Bilton and explores the meaning of fame and influence in the digital age through an innovative social experiment. The movie follows three LA-based people with relatively small followings and the attempts made to turn them into famous influencers by purchasing fake followers and bots to “engage” with their social media accounts. Bilton (The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley) is also producing the Consolidated Documentaries production with Annabelle Dunne & Mary Recine (Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold).

Soundtrack Album for HBO’s ‘Bad Education’ to Be Released

WaterTower Music will release a soundtrack album for the comedy drama Bad Education. The album features the film’s original music composed by Michael Abels (Get Out, Us, See You Yesterday, All Day and a Night). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, April 24 and will be available to stream/download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio clips. Bad Education is directed by Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds) and stars Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Rafael Casal, Ray Romano, Geraldine Viswanathan and Alex Wolff. The movie tells the story of an infamous school-larceny scandal that rocked Long Island in the early aughts and revolves around the school superintendent and his assistant who are credited with bringing Roslyn School District unprecedented prestige.

Michael Abels (Get Out, Us, See You Yesterday) has been hired to score the upcoming Netflix original movie All Day and a Night. The film is written and directed by Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther) and stars Ashton Sanders, Jeffrey Wright, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Regina Taylor, Kelly Jenrette, Isaiah John, Shakira Ja-nai Paye and Andrea Lynn Ellsworth. The drama follows a young criminal after his arrival in prison as he looks back on the days preceding his arrest and the circumstances of his childhood to find clues to his way forward in life and his survival. Color Force’s Nina Jacobson (The Hunger Games) and Brad Simpson (American Crime Story, Crazy Rich Asians) and Jared Ian Goldman (Ingrid Goes West, Wilson).

Nicholas Britell Named Film Composer of the Year at 2019 World Soundtrack Awards

Nicholas Britell was named Film Composer of the Year at the 19th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 46th Ghent Film Festival. The composer’s film scoring work over the last year includes Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk (for which he also earned an Academy Award nomination) and Adam McKay’s Vice. Hildur Guðnadóttir received her first World Soundtrack Award in the TV Composer of the Year category for her score for HBO’s Chernobyl, for which she recently also won her first Emmy Award. Michael Abels (Us) was honored in the Discovery of the Year category.

‘Us’ Live Concert Experience Announced

AEG and Monkeypaw Productions have announced a live concert event for Jordan Peele’s Us. The film’s composer Michael Abels (Get Out) will be conducting the Hollywood Studio Orchestra and a live choir for a performance of his score while the movie is playing on the big screen.
