Only one new movie is opening in wide release this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the superhero sequel Thor: The Dark World directed by Alan Taylor and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Kat Dennings, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Anthony Hopkins. Brian Tyler who previously scored Marvel’s Iron Man 3 earlier this year has composed the film’s music. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally and Intrada Records will release a physical version. Opening in limited release is the period drama The Book Thief directed by Brian Percival and starring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Sophie Nelisse. The film’s original music is composed and conducted by Academy Award winner John Williams. Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on November 8. This past Saturday night, film music record label Varèse Sarabande hosted their 35th Anniversary Halloween Concert Gala at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California. The concert was hosted and produced by Robert Townson and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) and Chorale. Highlights included a suite from the comic book film adaptation of Ghost Rider, which Golden Globe-nominated composer Christopher Young (The Shipping News, Spider-Man 3) arranged specifically for the concert and which featured a full orchestra, chorus and a heavy metal band led by Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. The performance was received with a standing ovation by the audience. Additionally, Oscar nominee Marco Beltrami (3:10 to Yuma, World War Z) made his concert conducting debut with a suite of his scores for Alex Proyas’ I, Robot and Knowing, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s Mimic and Hellboy. 
Brian Tyler has officially signed on to score the upcoming action sequel Fast & Furious 7. The film is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious, Saw) and stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana Brewster and Lucas Black who all reprise their roles from the previous films in the series. They are joined by new cast members including Kurt Russell, Ronda Rousey, Djimon Hounsou and Jason Statham. No plot details have been revealed yet, but the movie is set to take place in Los Angeles for the first time since the 2000 original film. Chris Morgan (Wanted) who penned the last four installments for the franchise is writing the screenplay and Neal Moritz (21 Jump Street, I Am Legend) returns as the producer of the project.

Premiering tomorrow, September 16, on Fox is the new mystery adventure drama Sleepy Hollow created by Alex Kurtzman & Bob Orci (Star Trek, Transformers), Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) & Phillip Iscove and starring Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie, Orlando Jones, John Cho and Katia Winter. Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Fast Five, Now You See Me) is composing the score for the series, which is based on The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow and follows Ichabod Crane as he partners with Sleepy Hollow’s Detective Abbie Archer to solve the mysteries of a town ravaged by the battle between good and evil. The album features the film’s original score composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Now You See Me, Fast Five). Brian Tyler has signed on to score Marvel Studios’ upcoming superhero sequel Thor: The Dark World. The film is directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins. The movie takes place in the aftermath of The Avengers and follows Thor as he battles to save all the Nine Realms from a mysterious enemy older than the universe itself. Kevin Feige is producing the project for Marvel Studios. 
Opening in most theaters is the sci-fi adventure After Earth directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith. The film’s music is composed by James Newton Howard (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village) who regularly works with the director.
