Weekly Film Music Roundup (March 6, 2020)

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Onward directed by Dan Scanlon and starring Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer. The film’s original score is composed by Mychael Danna (Life of Pi, Moneyball, Capote, Little Miss Sunshine) and Jeff Danna (The Good Dinosaur, The Addams Family, Storks). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as an original song co-written and performed by Brandi Carlile. Also opening wide is the drama The Way Back directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Ben Affleck, Al Madrigal, Michaela Watkins, Janina Gavankar and Glynn Turman. Rob Simonsen (Love, Simon, Nerve, Foxcatcher, The Upside, (500) Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now) has composed the film’s original music. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last week. ‘The Elephant Queen’ Soundtrack Released

Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album for the documentary The Elephant Queen. The album features the film’s original music composed by Golden Globe nominee Alex Heffes (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, The Last King of Scotland, Queen of Katwe, Touching the Void, 11/22/63). The soundtrack is now available to stream and download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. The Elephant Queen is directed by Mark Deeble & Victoria Stone and narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor. The movie follows a majestic female elephant as sheleads her herd in search of a new place to call home.

Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure Maleficent: Mistress of Evil directed by Joachim Rønning and starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. The film’s original music is composed Geoff Zanelli (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disturbia, Christopher Robin). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as an original song performed by Bebe Rexha. Click here for the full album details.

Also opening wide is the horror comedy Zombieland: Double Tap directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch and Luke Wilson. David Sardy (21, End of Watch, Bright, Premium Rush) who has composed the music for the 2009 original movie has composed the sequel’s original score. Alex Heffes Scoring Scott Wiper’s ‘London Calling’

Alex Heffes has recently scored the upcoming drama London Calling (aka The Big Ugly). The film is directed by Scott Wiper (The Condemned, A Better Way to Die) and stars Ron Perlman, Leven Rambin, Malcolm McDowell and Vinnie Jones. The movie revolves around a group of London mob bosses who invest in a West Virginia oil deal in hopes of laundering dirty money. Wiper is also producing the project with Tarquin Pack (Kick-Ass) and Karri O’Reilly (The Philly Kid, Linewatch).

Opening in limited release this week is the survival drama Arctic co-written and directed by Joe Penna and starring Mads Mikkelsen. Joseph Trapanese (Oblivion, Straight Outta Compton, The Greatest Showman, Allegiant, Robin Hood) has composed the film’s original music. ‘Miss Bala’ Soundtrack Details

Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the action thriller Miss Bala. The album features the film’s original music composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, 11.21.63, Roots, State of Play, Touching the Void, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom). The soundtrack will be released tomorrow, January 25 and will be available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. A CD version will be available to order here. Miss Bala is directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Lords of Dogtown, Thirteen) and stars Gina Rodriguez, Ismael Cruz Córdova and Anthony Mackie. The movie follows a woman who finds a power she never knew she had when she is drawn into a dangerous world of cross-border crime.

Alex Heffes Scoring William Nicholson’s ‘Hope Gap’

Earlier this month, Alex Heffes has recorded his score for the upcoming British family drama Hope Gap. The film is written and directed by William Nicholson (screenwriter of Gladiator, Les Miserables, Shadowlands & Unbroken) and stars Annette Bening, Bill Nighy and Josh O’Connor. The movie charts the unraveling of a marriage after 29 years and the impact on a family unit. David M Thompson (Woman in Gold, The Sense of an Ending) is producing the project for Origin Pictures, alongside Sarada McDermott.

Premiering tonight in the U.S. is Fox Networks Group Europe & Africa’s first original series Deep State created by Matthew Parkhill & Simon Maxwell and starring Mark Strong, Karima McAdams, Joe Dempsie, Lyne Renée, Alistair Petrie, Anastasia Griffith, Amelia Bullmore, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Pip Torrens and Fares Fares. The show’s original music is composed by Harry Escott (Shame, Hard Candy, Welcome to the Punch). Also premiering in the U.S. tonight is the British mini-series Man in an Orange Shirt directed by Michael Samuels and starring James McArdle, Joanna Vanderham, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Julian Morris and Vanessa Redgrave. Dan Jones (On Chesil Beach, Shadow of the Vampire, Lady Macbeth, Max) has composed the project’s original music. ‘Pickpockets’ Soundtrack Announced

Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack album for the Columbian drama Pickpockets. The album features the film’s original music composed by Golden Globe nominee Alex Heffes (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, The Last King of Scotland, Roots, 11.22.63, Touching the Void, State of Play). The soundtrack will be released digitally on May 18, 2018 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Pickpockets is directed by Peter Webber (The Girl with the Pearl Earring) and stars Carlos Bardem, Natalia Reyes and Emiliano Pernia. The movie follows a group of teen thieves who learn what it takes to be successful pickpockets on the streets of Bogotá from a master in the art of trickery and deception.

Alex Heffes is reteaming with director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown) on the upcoming crime thriller Miss Bala. The film starring Gina Rodriguez, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Matt Lauria and Cristina Rodlo is based on the 2011 Mexican film of the same title (directed by Gerardo Naranjo and scored by Emilio Kauderer) and centers on a woman who, after her friend goes missing in Tijuana, finds herself a pawn in a dangerous game being played by the CIA, the DEA and a charismatic young crime boss. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has written the screenplay.
