The only movie opening in theaters nationwide this week is the film adaptation of the stage musical Dear Evan Hansen directed by Stephen Chobsky and starring Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Amandla Stenberg, Nik Dodani, Colton Ryan, Danny Pino and DeMarius Copes. The film’s original score is composed by Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Luca, Maniac, Beasts of No Nation, The Good Doctor) and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman) who co-wrote the songs for the original music with Benj Pasek. Interscope Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie, including the original track The Anonymous Ones written by Pasek, Paul & Stenberg. Marcelo Zarvos to Score Denzel Washington’s ‘A Journal for Jordan’
Marcelo Zarvos (Wonder, The Affair, The Good Shepherd, Ray Donovan, Enough Said) has been hired to score the upcoming drama A Journal for Jordan. The film is directed by Denzel Washington and stars Michael B. Jordan, Chanté Adams and Jalon Christian. The movie tells the true story of Sergeant Charles Monroe King, a soldier deployed to Iraq who begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son. Virgil Williams (Mudbound) wrote the screenplay based on the book by Dana Canedy.
Marcelo Zarvos Scoring Antoine Fuqua’s ‘The Guilty’
Composer Marcelo Zarvos (Fences, The Affair, Wonder, Ray Donovan, The Good Shepherd, Enough Said) is reteaming with director Antoine Fuqua on the upcoming Netflix original film The Guilty. The movie is based on the Gustav Moller’s Danish drama Den Skyldige and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Riley Keough, Byron Bowers, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Christina Vidal, Paul Dano, Ethan Hawke, David Castañeda, Adrian Martinez, Bill Burr, Beau Knapp and Edi Patterson. The thriller takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center and follows a call operator as he tries to save a caller in grave danger, but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective) wrote the screenplay.

Premiering today is the the National Geographic event series Genius: Aretha created by Suzan-Lori Parks and starring Cynthia Erivo, Courtney B. Vance, Malcolm Barrett, Pauletta Washington, David Cross, Patrice Covington, Rebecca Naomi Jones and Steven Norfleet. The show’s original score is composed by Terence Blanchard (BlacKkKlansman, Inside Man, Da 5 Bloods, Malcolm X). Raphael Saadiq (Lovecraft County, Insecure) serves as the project’s executive music producer and Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe have provided a new version of their Emmy Award-nominated main titles theme. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) and tells the story of the unprecedented sports shutdown in March of 2020 and the remarkable turn of events that followed. The movie chronicles the abrupt stoppage, athletes’ prominent role in the cultural reckoning on racial injustices that escalated during the pandemic, and the complex return to competition in the summer and fall.

The movie is based on Bradley Trevor Greive’s & Cameron Bloom’s bestseller of the same name and tells the true story of Sam Bloom, whose recovery from a tragic accident is helped when she and her family meet an unusual visitor. Shaun Grant (The Snowtown Murders, The True History of the Kelly Gang) and Harry Cripps (The Dry) wrote the screenplay.

Opening on VOD following its debut on DirecTV last month is the drama Human Capital directed by Marc Meyers, written by Oren Moverman and starring Liev Schreiber, Marisa Tomei, Peter Sarsgaard, Maya Hawke, Alex Wolff, Paul Sparks, Aasif Mandvi and Fred Hechinger. The film’s original music is composed by Marcelo Zarvos (Wonder, Fences, The Good Shepherd, The Affair, Ray Donovan, Enough Said). No word on a soundtrack release. Marcelo Zarvos Scoring Quibi’s ‘#Freerayshawn’
Marcelo Zarvos (Fences, Wonder, The Affair, Ray Donovan, The Good Shepherd) has been tapped to score the upcoming Quibi original series #Freerayshawn. The show is directed by Seith Mann (The Breaks) and stars Stephan James, Laurence Fishburne, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Skeet Ulrich and Annabeth Gish. The shortform drama is based on a feature script by Marc Maurino and tells the story of a young, black Iraq War veteran who is set up by New Orleans police on a drug deal, runs for his life, and takes refuge inside his apartment building with his girlfriend and child.
