Alexandre Desplat has recently recorded his music for the upcoming indie drama Moonrise Kingdom. The film marks the composer’s second collaboration with director Wes Anderson after 2009’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox, for which Desplat earned an Academy Award nomination. The movie stars Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Francis McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward. The film is co-written by Anderson and Roman Coppola (The Darjeeling Limited) and is set in a small New England town that is turned upside down when a young boy and girl who fall in love run away together. Anderson is producing the project alongside Scott Rudin (The Social Network, No Country for Old Men), Steven Rales (Young Adult) and Jeremy Dawson (Fantastic Mr. Fox).

‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ Soundtrack Announced
WaterTower Music will be releasing the soundtrack album for the drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which marks the last major movie of the year for which no soundtrack announcement had been made yet (visit our upcoming soundtracks section for a full listing of the soundtracks coming out in the next couple of weeks). The album includes the original score from the movie composed and conducted by Alexandre Desplat and will be released on January 17, 2011. The composer recently finished recording around 80 minutes of music that he wrote in less than one month after coming in as a replacement for Nico Muhly. Check back on this page for the full details and audio clips of the soundtrack within the next couple of weeks.
Weekly Film Music Roundup (November 25, 2011)
Three new movies opened in wide release this past Wednesday:
The film released in most theaters this Thanksgiving weekend is the new movie adaptation of The Muppets directed by James Bobin and starring Amy Adams, Jason Segel and Chris Cooper. The film’s score is written by Christophe Beck and Bret McKenzie serves as the project’s music supervisor and has also written several songs for the movie. A soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film has been released on Walt Disney Records. To find out more about the album, visit out our previous article. Also opening wide is the family movie Hugo directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Sascha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Emily Mortimer, Ben Kingsley, Ray Winstone and Christopher Lee. Howard Shore has composed the music for the film. A soundtrack album including the composer’s score has been released on his own label Howe Records last Tuesday. Alexandre Desplat to Reunite with Florent Emilio Siri on ‘Cloclo’
Alexandre Desplat is set to reunite with director Florent Emilio Siri on the upcoming biographical drama Cloclo. The composer has scored all of the director’s previous features, including the Bruce Willis-starring thriller Hostage, the crime thriller The Nest and most recently, the historical drama L’ennemi intime. Cloclo stars Jérémie Renier as French singer Claude François who was a star of “chanson française” in the 1960 and 70s and died in a tragic accident in 1978, at the age of 39. Benoît Magimel, Monica Scattini, Ana Girardot, Joséphine Japy and Robert Knepper who plays Frank Sinatra are co-starring in the drama. Julien Rappeneau (The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch) has written the screenplay and Cyril Colbeau-Justin & Jean-Baptiste Dupont (36th Precint, Point Blank) are producing the project.

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the fourth part of the Twilight series, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 directed by Bill Condon and starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Michael Sheen, Anna Kendrick and Ashley Greene. The film’s score is composed by Carter Burwell who has scored his second movie for the franchise. A soundtrack album with the songs from the film, plus one track from Burwell’s score has already been released by Atlantic Records. Also opening wide is the animated film sequel Happy Feet Two directed by George Miller and featuring the voice talent of Elijah Wood, Pink, Robin Williams, Hank Azari, Benjamin Flores, Elizabeth Daily, Sofía Vergara, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Hugo Weaving and Anthony LaPaglia. John Powell has written the score and also produced the songs for the film. Some of the other composers well known in the film music community who are involved in the music for the project include T Bone Burnett and David Hirschfelder. ‘The Ides of March’ Soundtrack Details
Varese Sarabande has revealed the details for the soundtrack of the political drama The Ides of March. The album features the original score from the film composed by Alexandre Desplat. The album will be released on CD on December 6, 2011 and is available for pre-order on Amazon. The soundtrack has also already been released digitally on iTunes, where you can check out audio clips from the album. The Ides of March is directed by George Clooney and stars Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Max Minghella and Jeffrey Wright.
‘World Soundtrack Awards’ Winners Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy announced the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2011 at last night’s closing event of the 38th Ghent International Film Festival. Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2011. Hans Zimmer received the award for Best Orginal Film Score of the Year for Inception and Randy Newman was awarded for his song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3 in the Best Original Song Written for Film category. Alex Heffes received the Discovery of the Year Award for The First Grader & The Rite. The Public Choice Award went to A.R. Rahman for the film 127 hours. Among the composers in attendance at the event were Giorgio Moroder who was the recipient of the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Gabriel Yared, Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Alexandre Desplat, Alex Heffes and Abel Korzeniowski.
Alexandre Desplat to Score ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’
Alexandre Desplat has been tapped to score the upcoming drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. He is taking over scoring duties from composer Nico Muhly who was originally attached to the project with his name even credited on the film’s poster and in the first trailer. The movie is directed by Academy Award nominated director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader) and stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, newcomer Thomas Horn, John Goodman, Viola Davis, Jeffrey Wright and Max von Sydow. The film is based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer is adapted for the screen by Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) and produced by Scott Rudin (The Social Network). The drama tells the story of a nine-year-old boy who searches New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father when he was killed in the September 11 attacks.
‘My Week with Marilyn’ Soundtrack Announced
Sony Classical has announced a soundtrack release for the drama My Week with Marilyn. The album includes the original score by Conrad Pope. Alexandre Desplat has written Marilyn’s Theme for the film and pianist Lang Lang is performing on the score. Also featured on the album are several period songs by Nat King Cole, a medley of When Love Goes Wrong and Heat Wave, as well as the end title song That Old Black Magic performed by lead actress Michelle Williams. Audio clips are available after the jump. The album will be released digitally on November 1, 2011 on Amazon and iTunes and a physical release is planned for later in the month.
