Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Expecting to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi action film Real Steel directed by Shawn Levy and starring Hugh Jackman, Kevin Durand, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Hope Davis. The movie’s score is composed by Danny Elfman. A soundtrack album featuring his score will be released on November 1 by Varese Sarabande (click here for the details). A separate soundtrack featuring songs from the movie by artists including Bad Meets Evil, Beastie Boys and Foo Fighters, as well as one track from Elfman’s score has been released on Interscope Records. Also opening wide is the drama The Ides of March directed by George Clooney and starring Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Max Minghella and Jeffrey Wright. The film’s music is written by Alexandre Desplat. As reported on this page last month, Varese Sarabande has announced a score album to be released on November 1. ‘The Ides of March’ Soundtrack Announced

Varese Sarabande has announced a soundtrack release for George Clooney’s drama The Ides of March. The album includes the original score from the film composed by Alexandre Desplat. The soundtrack will be released on November 1, 2011. More details are expected to be announced in the next couple of weeks and will be posted on this page. The Ides of March stars Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Max Minghella and Jeffrey Wright. The movie about a young press spokesman who falls prey to backroom politics recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was also shown at the Toronto Film Festival.

Conrad Pope to Score ‘My Week with Marilyn’

UPDATE (August 23, 2011): We have learned that composer Alexandre Desplat has written a theme for My Week with Marilyn. The piece called Marilyn’s Theme will be adapted by Conrad Pope into his score. Pope has been an orchestrator on a number of movies scored by Desplat in the past couple of years. Most recently, he worked with the composer on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Conrad Pope is currently scoring the upcoming drama My Week with Marilyn. The movie directed by Simon Curtis stars Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Judi Dench, Dominic Cooper, Emma Watson, Julia Ormond, Derek Jacobi and Dougray Scott. The film chronicles a week in the life of Monroe during the production of Laurence Olivier’s film The Prince and the Showgirl. Screenwriter Adrian Hodges adapted the memoirs of Colin Clark, the assistant who worked with Monroe on the production of the picture. David Pardiff (Shakespeare in Love) is producing the movie. While Pope is best known as an orchestrator for some of Hollywood’s top composers (John Williams, Alexandre Desplat, James Newton Howard, Alan Silvestri), he has also scored several movies himself, including the 2001 drama Pavilion of Women starring Willem Dafoe and 2009’s In My Sleep.

Alexandre Desplat Scoring Roman Polanski’s ‘Carnage’

Film Music Reporter has learned that Alexandre Desplat has recently scored Roman Polanski’s upcoming black comedy Carnage. We have previously reported that Alberto Iglesias was attached to score the film according to a press release by Sony Pictures Classics in April, but it appears that the composer (who recently finished scoring the thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) never wrote any music for the film. Carnage marks the second collaboration between Polanski and Desplat who worked together on the director’s last movie The Ghost Writer. The movie is based on the Tony-winning play God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza and stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Already beating box office records is the fantasy sequel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The film’s music is composed by Alexandre Desplat who scored his second Harry Potter film. A soundtrack album featuring Desplat’ score has been released on Watertower Music (click here for our soundtrack announcement including audio clips). To watch a short video from the score’s recording sessions and to listen to an audio interview with the composer, check out our previous article. Also opening wide is Walt Disney Pictures’ animated film Winnie the Pooh. Henry Jackman composed the score for the movie. A soundtrack album featuring Jackman’s score, the film’s songs written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and an original song by Zooey Deschanel has been released on Walt Disney Records. Alexandre Desplat on ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’

Pixar’s animated film Cars 2 directed by John Lasseter is expected to top the weekend box office. The film’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino. A soundtrack album featuring five songs, as well as Giacchino’s score has been released by Walt Disney Records. Also opening wide is the comedy Bad Teacher directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel. The film’s score is written by Michael Andrews. ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’ Soundtrack Details

Watertower Music will be releasing the official soundtrack album for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The album includes the original score by Alexandre Desplat and will be released on July 12, 2011. The music was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London. The soundtrack is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the album below. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is directed by David Yates and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grind, Emma Watson, Ralph Fiennes, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith and Tom Felton. Two new movies are opening wide this Memorial Day weekend:

Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 directed by Jennifer Yuh and featuring the voice talent of Jack Black  Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Gary Oldman, David Cross, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Liu, Michelle Yeoh, Dennis Haysbert, Victor Garber and Dustin Hoffman is opening in almost 4000 theaters. The film’s music is by Hans Zimmer and John Powell. A score album has been released by Varese Sarabande. For details and audio clips, visit our previous article. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel The Hangover Part II directed by Todd Phillips and starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson. The film’s score is by Christophe Beck. No score album has been announced, but a soundtrack including the songs featured in the movie has been released by Watertower Music. Alexandre Desplat’s ‘A Better Life’ Soundtrack announced

Nacional Records has announced a soundtrack release for the upcoming drama A Better Life. The album includes the original score by composer Alexandre Desplat, as well as the original song El Jardinero by Ozomatli. The soundtrack will be available on June 21, 2011 as a digital download release on Amazon. To listen to audio clips from each track on the album, check out the box below. A Better Life directed by Chris Weitz (Eclipse, The Golden Compass) and starring Demian Bichir centers on a gardener in East L.A. who struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while traveling across town to perform landscaping work for the city’s wealthy landowner.
