Music Box Records has announced a new soundtrack album for the 1979 drama Tess directed by Roman Polanski and starring Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth, Leigh Lawson, Rosemary Martin, John Collin, Richard Pearson and Carolyn Pickles. The album features the film’s Academy Award-nominated expanded and remastered original score composed by Philippe Sarde (The Tenant, Quest for Fire, Lord of the Flies, Pirates, Barocco, Ghost Story, Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud) and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, including previously unreleased music. The CD, which is limited to 1,000 copies, is now available to order on the label’s official website, where you can also check out the full album details and listen to audio samples.

Alexandre Desplat to Score Roman Polanski’s ‘The Palace’
Composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shape of Water, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The King’s Speech, Godzilla) is set to reteam with director Roman Polanski (Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby, The Pianist) on the upcoming drama The Palace. The film starring Mickey Rourke, Oliver Masucci and Fanny Ardant takes place at a luxurious Swiss hotel on New Year’s Eve in 1999, with hotel guests coming from all over the world flock to the lavish dinner party, when the celebrations take an unexpected turn.
‘Tess’ & ‘The Bear’ Digital Soundtrack Albums Released
Pathé Films has released released new soundtrack albums for two classic French films featuring music by Philippe Sarde (The Tenant, Barocco, Quest for Fire, Lord of the Flies, Ghost Story, Pirates, Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud). Available to stream/download now on all major digital music services is the composer’s Academy Award-nominated score for Roman Polanski’s 1979 drama Tess based on Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles and starring Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth, Leigh Lawson, John Collin, Martin, Carolyn Pickles and Richard Pearson, as well his music for Jean-Jacques Annaud’s 1988 adventure drama The Bear (L’ours) based on James Oliver Curwood’s novel The Grizzly King and starring Bart the Bear, Youk the Bear, Tcheky, Karyo, Jack Wallace and Andre Lacombe. Soundtrack Album for Roman Polanski’s ‘An Officer and a Spy’ (‘J’accuse’) to Be Released
Warner Classics will release a soundtrack album for Roman Polanski’s drama An Officer and a Spy (J’accuse). The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) who previously scored the director’s last four features, The Ghost Writer, Carnage, Venus in Fur and Based on a True Story. Also included are two classical pieces by Gabriel Fauré. The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, November 8 and will be available to stream/download on Amazon. A CD version is also being released overseas (click here to order). An Officer and a Spy is co-written and directed by Polanski and stars Jean Dujardin, Louis Garrel, Emmanuelle Seigner and Grégory Gadebois.
Alexandre Desplat Scoring Roman Polanski’s ‘Based on a True Story’
Alexandre Desplat is currently scoring Roman Polanski’s upcoming French-language thriller Based on a True Story. The film starring Emmanuelle Seigner, Eva Green and Vincent Perez follows a Parisian author with writer’s block who discovers a mysterious woman at a book signing. Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria) and Polanski wrote the screenplay based on Delphine de Vigan’s novel of the same title. Wassim Beji (Yves Saint Laurent, A Perfect Man) is producing the project for WY Productions.
Alexandre Desplat to Score Roman Polanski’s Dreyfus Affair Drama ‘D’
Alexandre Desplat revealed during a conversation and performance of his Oscar-nominated score for Philomena on Sunday afternoon at the Beverly Hills Hotel that he will be reteaming with Roman Polanski on the director’s next movie D. The film tells the true story of Albert Dreyfus, one of the few Jewish officers on the General Staff of the French Army, who was subjected to a secret court martial for passing secrets to the Germans. Robert Harris (The Ghost Writer) has written the screenplay and Robert Benmussa (The Pianist, High Tension) and Alain Sarde (Mulholland Drive, Vera Drake) are serving as producers. The political thriller will mark the fourth collaboration between the composer and Polanski following 2010’s The Ghost Writer, 2011’s Carnage and last year’s Venus in Fur.
‘Venus in Fur’ Soundtrack Released
Playtime has released a soundtrack album for Roman Polanski’s drama Venus in Fur (La Vénus à la fourrure). The album features the film’s original score composed and conducted by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, Argo) who previously worked together with the director on The Ghost Writer and Carnage. Venus in Fur is written by David Ives based on his Tony-winning stage play and stars Emmanuelle Seigner and Mathieu Amalric. The movie follows an actress who attempts to convince a director how she’s perfect for a role in his upcoming production. The drama premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is now playing in theaters in France and other European countries.
Alexandre Desplat to Score Stephen Frears’ ‘Philomena’
Alexandre Desplat is reteaming with director Stephen Frears on the upcoming tragic comedy Philomena. The film starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan is based on the book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a 50 Year Search by BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith and tells the true story of an Irish woman seeking the illegitimate son she was forced to put up for adoption in the U.S. Coogan co-wrote the script with Jeff Pope and is also producing the BBC Films, Pathe and British Film Institute production with Gabrielle Tana (The Duchess, Coriolanus) and Tracey Seaward (The Queen, Dirty Pretty Things). Desplat has previously collaborated with Frears on the Academy Award-nominated drama The Queen, as well as Cheri and Tamara Drewe.
Unused ‘Chinatown’ Score Released
Perseverance Records has announced a release of the unused score for Roman Polanski’s 1974 classic movie Chinatown starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. The music is composed by Phillip Lambro. The music was ultimately rejected by Paramount Pictures and replaced by a score by Jerry Goldsmith who ended up receiving one of the film’s eleven Academy Award nominations. In addition to the unused score, the album also features the two concert pieces Structures for String Orchestra and Music for Wind, Brass and Percussion. The limited edition soundtrack album is now available to order in the label’s online store, where you can also listen to the main titles of the score.
New ‘Frantic’ Soundtrack Edition Announced
Film Score Monthly has announced a new soundtrack edition for the 1988 thriller Frantic. Ennio Morricone has written the music for the Roman Polanski-directed movie. The album includes a newly remastered presentation of the original soundtrack album released in 1988 by Elektra Records, which has been out of print for years and features a lot of music that does not appear in the film. In addition, the release also includes the premiere release of Morricone’s complete score as it appears in the film.
