Weekly Film Music Roundup (June 24, 2011)

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Pixar’s animated film Cars 2 directed by John Lasseter is expected to top the weekend box office. The film’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino. A soundtrack album featuring five songs, as well as Giacchino’s score has been released by Walt Disney Records. Also opening wide is the comedy Bad Teacher directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel. The film’s score is written by Michael Andrews. The Sound and Music of ‘Cars 2’

SoundWorks Collection has published a new profile on the sound and music of Pixar’s Cars 2, which is opening in theaters today. The profile includes interviews with composer Michael Giacchino, re-recording mixer and sound designer Tom Myers, and sound effects editor Al Nelson. Check out the full video after the jump. Giacchino recently also was featured on Collider, IGN and Movieline talking about his work on his fourth Pixar movie and his other recent and upcoming projects, including Super 8, Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol, John Carter, as well as the upcoming Star Trek sequel. Michael Giacchino on ‘Cars 2’

Michael Giacchino has been doing a lot of interviews lately about his score for Pixar’s animated film Cars 2. The Pixar Podcast recently featured a 30-minute conversation with Giacchino talking about his work on the Pixar film, his collaboration with director John Lasseter, the difference between working on film and TV, his thematic approach and his thoughts on today’s film music. ‘Cars 2’ Soundtrack Update

A press release from Disney has announced the contents of the upcoming soundtrack release of Pixar’s Cars 2. Apart from 21 tracks of Michael Giacchino‘s original score, the album also includes a song written by the composer and performed by French singer/songwriter Bénabar. The song is called Mon coeur fait vroum (My Heart Goes Vroom) and is providing a musical introduction to Paris in the animation sequel. Also included on the soundtrack is the American alternative rock band Weezer, performing their own take of the 1984 pop hit You Might Think. Country superstar Brad Paisley, who was a major contributor to the first Cars soundtrack, returns with two new songs, including the duet Collisions of World, performed by Paisley and singer/songwriter Robbie Williams. Finally, the hit single Polyrhythm by the Japanese girl band Perfume is also featured on the release. The soundtrack will be released on June 14. To pre-order the album, visit Amazon.

Michael Giacchino’s ‘Cars 2’ Soundtrack announced

Walt Disney Records has announced a soundtrack album for the Pixar animation sequel Cars 2. The album includes Michael Giacchino’s original score from the film. According to the Pixar Blog, there will also be two original songs featured on the album, including a duet by two male artists. The soundtrack will be released on June 14, 2011 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. A track list for the album will be posted when it gets published. Movieweb recently interviewed Giacchino about the project at a press event at Pixar’s Emeryville, California facility. The composer talked about working with Pixar, his thematic approach, as well as using the surf guitar for the “spy element” of the film. To check out the full interview, visit Movieweb.

Giacchino to score Cars 2

According to a recent article in Variety, Michael Giacchino has started working on Pixar’s animation sequel Cars 2. Giacchino follows the footsteps of Randy Newman, who scored the first part back in 2006. In the sequel directed by Brad Lewis and John Lassetter, racing star Lightning McQueen teams up with his best friend Mater for an international adventure as they go up against the world’s fastest car. Most of the voice talent of the first movie is expected to return. Cars 2, which marks Giacchino’s third Pixar project after The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Up is slated to come out on June 24, 2011.
