Michael Giacchino was honored with a Saturn Award tonight at the 38th annual Saturn Awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. The composer won the award in the Best Music category for his score for last year’s Super 8, which also received awards for director J.J. Abrams and actor Joel Courtney in the Best Performance by a Younger Actor category. Giacchino was also nominated for his music for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The other nominated composers were Howard Shore (Hugo), Alan Silvestri (Captain America: The First Avenger) and John Williams (The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse). Michael Giacchino’s ‘Super 8’ Soundtrack in Concert
Last weekend, Michael Giacchino conducted a concert on the roof of J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot. The scores performed include the Bad Robots productions Super 8, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Star Trek and the TV show Lost. David Poland from Movie City News has published a video of the performance of the Super 8 suite from the concert and also interviewed the composer about his work on the film. ‘Super 8’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande has announced the details for the soundtrack release for J.J. Abrams’ Super 8. The album features the original score by Michael Giacchino, including one cue not contained in the film. As reported in May, the soundtrack was originally supposed to come out on June 28, but the release date has been pushed back a few times and is now set for August 2, 2011. To pre-order the CD, visit Amazon. Super 8 is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Ron Eldard, Kyle Chandler and Noah Emmerich. The movie has been released on June 10 and is currently still playing in theaters.
Michael Giacchino & J.J. Abrams: A Conversation
Yesterday afternoon, Michael Giacchino and J.J. Abrams took part in a discussion of the movie industry and their work together at UCLA’s Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. I Heart Woo has uploaded a video of almost 10 minutes from the event. During the conversation, Giacchino and Abrams talk about the director/composer relationship, the composer’s work on their first collaboration on Alias, as well as their thoughts on the ending of Lost. They also discuss their most recent project Super 8 with Giacchino explaining the use of the Hammer B3 organ in the score. Check out the full video after the jump.
Weekly Film Music Roundup (June 10, 2011)
Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Super 8 directed by J.J. Abrams, produced by Steven Spielberg and staring Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Ron Eldard, Kyle Chandler and Noah Emmerich is opening in most features music composed by Michael Giacchino. As previously announced on this page, Varese Sarabande will be releasing a score album on June 28. Visit MTV Movie Blog for a video interview with Giacchino from the Super 8 premiere and check out a recent article in Variety about the composer’s newest projects. More interviews are expected to appear in the next couple of weeks.
Also opening wide this weekend is the kid’s pic Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer directed by John Schultz and starring Jordana Beatty in the title role, as well as Heather Graham and Jaleel White. Richard Gibbs has written the film’s score. The music was recorded with an 80-piece orchestra at the Newman Scoring Stage on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles. Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack release for the upcoming sci-fi mystery film Super 8. The album includes Michael Giacchino‘s original score from the J.J. Abrams-directed movie. The soundtrack will be released on June 28, 2011. The album is now available to pre-order on Amazon. More details on the soundtrack will posted in the next couple of weeks as they’re announced. Super 8 is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Ron Eldard, Kyle Chandler and Noah Emmerich. The film takes place in the summer of 1979 and revolves around a group of friends who begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon. The movie will be released on June 10.
Giacchino to score Cars 2
According to a recent article in Variety, Michael Giacchino has started working on Pixar’s animation sequel Cars 2. Giacchino follows the footsteps of Randy Newman, who scored the first part back in 2006. In the sequel directed by Brad Lewis and John Lassetter, racing star Lightning McQueen teams up with his best friend Mater for an international adventure as they go up against the world’s fastest car. Most of the voice talent of the first movie is expected to return. Cars 2, which marks Giacchino’s third Pixar project after The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Up is slated to come out on June 24, 2011.
