Richard Gibbs has signed on to score the upcoming music drama Coco. The film is directed by RZA (The Man with the Iron Fists) and stars Azealia Banks, Common, Jill Scott, Lucien Laviscount, Lorraine Toussaint and Hana Mae. The movie follows an aspiring hip-hop artist who struggles to pursue her music and returns to school, where she discovers the vivid world of slam poetry and finds her true voice and an unlikely love. Nicole Asher has written the screenplay. Paul Hall (Higher Learning, For Colored Girls, Addicted, Pride) is producing the project.

‘Hell & Back’ to Feature Music by Richard Gibbs
Richard Gibbs is composing the score for the upcoming R-rated stop motion animated feature comedy Hell & Back. The film is directed by Tommy Gianas (Human Giant) & Ross Shuman and follows two best friends as they rescue a buddy who has been accidentally dragged to Hell. The movie’s voice cast includes Mila Kunis, Nick Swardson, Danny McBride, Susan Sarandon, Jennifer Coolidge, Maria Bamford, TJ Miller, Rob Riggle, Brian Posehn and Kumail Najiani. Corey Campodonico, Eric Blyler and Alex Bulkley (Robot Chicken, Moral Orel) are producing the ShadowMachine Films production. Gibbs’ previous scoring credits include 10 Things I Hate About You, Doctor Dolittle, Big Momma’s House, 28 Days, I Spy and Battlestar Galactica. Hell & Back is currently in post-production and is expected to be completed later this year.
Weekly Film Music Roundup (June 10, 2011)
Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Super 8 directed by J.J. Abrams, produced by Steven Spielberg and staring Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Ron Eldard, Kyle Chandler and Noah Emmerich is opening in most features music composed by Michael Giacchino. As previously announced on this page, Varese Sarabande will be releasing a score album on June 28. Visit MTV Movie Blog for a video interview with Giacchino from the Super 8 premiere and check out a recent article in Variety about the composer’s newest projects. More interviews are expected to appear in the next couple of weeks.
Also opening wide this weekend is the kid’s pic Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer directed by John Schultz and starring Jordana Beatty in the title role, as well as Heather Graham and Jaleel White. Richard Gibbs has written the film’s score. The music was recorded with an 80-piece orchestra at the Newman Scoring Stage on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles. Richard Gibbs scoring ‘Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer’
Richard Gibbs is currently scoring the upcoming comedy Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. The movie is based on is based on characters from Megan McDonald’s children’s book series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy chronicles Judy Moody’s determination to have the most thrilling summer of her life, aided by her brother Stink and her fun-loving Aunt Opal. The film is directed by John Schultz and stars Jordana Beatty in the title role, Heather Graham and Jaleel White. Schultz and Gibbs previously collaborated on 2002’s Like Mike, 2003’s When Zachary Beaver Came to Town and 2005’s The Honeymooners. Schultz has also most recently worked together with composer John Debney on Aliens in the Attic. Relativity Media recently acquired domestic rights to Judy Moody and has scheduled a June 12, 2011 release date.
