Alexandre Desplat’s score for The King’s Speech will be released by Decca Records on November 22. The soundtrack album features about 30 minutes of score, plus two classical pieces by Beethoven which have been specifically recorded for the movie. Alexandre Desplat to finish Harry Potter series
Warner Bros has officially confirmed that Alexandre Desplat will be back as the composer for the last installment in the Harry Potter series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. While Desplat’s attachment to the project has been expected given his involvement in the first part of the final book adaptation, there has been much speculation that John Williams might return to score the last movie of the franchise. The last movie begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemorts final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again. Most of the cast & crew of the recent Potter movies including David Yates will be back for the film. Warner Bros will release the conclusion of the series on July 15, 2011.
Alexandre Desplat to score The Gardener
UPDATE (February 24, 2011): The Gardener has recently received a new title: 
A Better Life.
Alexandre Desplat has been hired to score the upcoming drama The Gardener. In the movie, a gardener in East L.A. struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while traveling across town to perform landscaping work for the city’s wealthy landowners. The Gardener is directed by Chris Weitz who previously worked with Desplat on The Golden Compass and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The indie drama stars Demian Bichir. No release date has been set yet for the Summit Entertainment movie.
Expanded Fantastic Mr. Fox score released
ABKCO Records just released an expanded version of Alexandre Desplat’s score from Fantastic Mr. Fox (The Abbey Road Mixes). The album includes 47 minutes of the Academy-Award nominated score. The release comes as a surprise, especially since 24 minutes of the score has already been released on the official soundtrack including the songs featured in the animated picture. At this time, the album is a download-only release and can be found on iTunes and Amazon.
Desplat to score The Special Relationship
Alexandre Desplat has been announced to score the drama The Special Relationship. The project traces former U.K. prime minister Tony Blair’s relationships with Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The movie is directed by Richard Loncraine who previously directed the action thriller Firewall which also had a score by Desplat. The film also marks another collaboration between writer/producer Peter Morgan, who Desplat worked with on The Queen. Michael Sheen reprises his role of Tony Blair from that movie is joined by Dennis Quaid as Bill Clinton and Hope David as Hillary Clinton. The BBC produced movie is scheduled to come out in May in the UK. A domestic distribution deal and release date has yet to be announced.
Desplat will also continue his relationship with director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Cheri) on Tamara Drewe. The movie about a young newspaper writer who returns to her hometown in the English countryside, where her childhood home is being prepped for sale stars Dominic Cooper and is scheduled to come out later this year by Sony Pictures Classics in the United States.
The extremely prolific composer also has the highly anticipated Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 on his slate of upcoming projects and is still working on Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, which should come out later this year.
