Ryuichi Sakamoto has passed away this past Tuesday, March 28, at age 71. The Japanese composer has written dozens of scores for a wide range of international films since the early 1980s. He won an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy Award for his music for Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 feature The Last Emperor (shared with David Byrne & Cong Su). He was also Grammy-nominated for his scores for Bertolucci’s Little Buddha and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant (with Alva Noto). Read the rest of this entry »

Bandenfilm has released a soundtrack album for the German sci-fi coming-of-age comedy drama The Ordinaries. The album features the film’s original music composed by Fabian Zeidler. The soundtrack is now available to stream/download here, where you can also check out audio samples. The Ordinaries is co-written and directed by Sophie Linnenbaum and stars Fine Sendel, Jule Böwe, Henning Peker, Sira Faal, Noah Tinwa and Denise M’Baye. The movie depicts a repressive three class-society, in which a simple supporting character is about to face the most important test of her life: she has to prove she deserves to be a lead. KOVAS (On My Block, Boo, Bitch, Freeridge, Fantasy Football, After Jackie) is the composer of the new Disney+ original series The Crossover. The show is based on the bestselling novel by Kwame Alexander and stars Derek Luke, Jalyn Hall, Amir O’Neil, Deja Monique Cruz, Sabrina Revelle, Trevor Bush and Skyla I’Lece, as well as Daveed Diggs as the narrator. Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the fantasy adventure Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directed by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein and starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith and Chloe Coleman. The film’s original score is composed by Lorne Balfe (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Top Gun: Maverick, Black WidowHis Dark MaterialsBlack Adam). Mercury Classics has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today (click here for the full details) and Fiction Records has released Tame Impala’s end credits song Wings of Time earlier this month (click here to listen to the track).

Opening semi-wide in around 900 theaters this week is the drama A Thousand and One written and directed by A.V. Rockwell and starring Teyana Taylor, Will Catlett, Josiah Cross Aven Courtney and Aaron Kingsley Adetola. Gary Gunn (David Makes Man, Master of Light, Maggie Black). has composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Enjoy the Ride Records has announced a new soundtrack album for the 1998 slasher comedy Bride of Chucky directed by Ronny Yu and starring Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, John Ritter, Nick Stabile and Katherine Heigl. The album features the complete original score from the fourth installment in the Child’s Play series composed by Graeme Revell (The Crow, Daredevil, Dead Calm, Pitch BlackTomb Raider, The Chronicles of RiddickPineapple Express), including almost 30 minutes of previously unreleased music. The film is directed by Josh Webber (Never Heard, Secrets of Deception) and stars Paxton Kubitz, Kylie Marshall, Santiago Ramirez, Cuba Gooding Jr, Joseph Baena, Richard Portnow, Mars Callahan, Ludovica Frasca, Glenn Plummer and Kaitlyn Raymond. Deutsche Grammophon has announced the album A Symphonic Celebration, a series of new symphonic arrangements of original soundtracks from Studio Ghibli classics directed by Hayao Miyazaki (including Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service & Castle in the Sky) written by composer Joe Hisaishi. The music was recorded in London by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Hisaishi. The album will be released digitally, on CD, Standard LP, Clear LP, Sky Blue LP & Picture disc on June 30, 2023. The track written by the movie’s composer Carlos Rafael Rivera (The Queen’s Gambit, Godless, Hacks, Just Beyond) & director Jonás Cuarón and performed by Julieta Venegas (who also wrote the lyrics) is now available to stream/download on all major digital music services, including Amazon. Candid Records has announced a soundtrack album for the sports drama Sweetwater. The album features the new songs Taking Me Higher by Keb’ Mo’ (already available to stream/download now and embedded below), Right Place Right Time by Larkin Poe, a new version of Someone to Watch Over Me by Dianne Reeves & Terri Lyne Carrington & as well as tracks by Gary Clark Jr., Robert Randolf, Rick Braun, Liyah Bey, Paul Hipp & others. Also included are the classics The Man I Love and Sweet Georgia Brown performed by Emmaline as Jeannie Staples in the movie. The soundtrack will be released digitally on April 14 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.
