Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the action drama The Grey directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Dallas Roberts, Joe Anderson and James Badge Dale. The film’s music is composed by Marc Streitenfeld who has become go-to composer of Ridley Scott (who is producing The Grey) over the last couple of years, having previously scored such films as American Gangster and Robin Hood. Also opening wide is the action thriller Man on a Ledge directed by Asger Leth and starring Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, Anthony Mackie, Genesis Rodriguez, Edward Burns and Kyra Sedgwick. Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class, Puss in Boots) has written the music for the film. Summit Entertainment has released a soundtrack album featuring Jackman’s music. The album is already available to download and the CD version will be released on February 7. ‘The Vow’ Soundtrack Announced

Rhino Records will be releasing the soundtrack album for the romantic drama The Vow. The album includes songs from the movie by artists including Meat Loaf, Matt Pond PA, The National, The Cure, Light FM, Voxhaul Broadcast, OK Go and Lykke Li. The soundtrack will be released on February 7, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the album below. None of Rachel Portman’s and Michael Brook’s score is included on the release. The Vow directed by Michael Sucsy and starring Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill, Scott Speedman, Wendy Crewson and Jessica Lange will be released in theaters on February 10. Sundance 2012 Film Music Roundup (Part 3)

Among the documentaries that premiered at this year’s festival is Finding North directed by Kristi Jacobson (Toots) and Lori Silverbush. The film examines the issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity. Both directors are also producing the movie with Julie Goldman (Buck) and Ryan Harrington (American Teen). T Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars have written the documentary’s music. The project marks Burnett’s first documentary credit as a composer. He has previously contributed music to a number of high profile films, including Crazy Heart, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Walk the Line and the upcoming The Hunger Games. Aaron Zigman to Score Tyler Perry’s ‘The Marriage Counselor’

Aaron Zigman has signed on to score the upcoming comedy drama The Marriage Counselor. The film is written and directed by Tyler Perry and stars Jurnee Smollett as an Ivy League educated relationship expert who gives marital advice for a living, yet can’t seem to follow that advice in her own marriage. The cast also includes Lance Gross, Kim Kardashian, Vanessa Williams, Brandy Norwood, Robbie Jones, Ella Joyce and Jerry Stiller. Paul Hall and Ozzie Areu, both regular collaborators of the filmmaker are producing the movie. Zigman has become Perry’s composer of choice for his feature projects over the last couple of years. ‘Safe House’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande has announced the details of the soundtrack release for the thriller Safe House. The album includes the original score by composer Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones, Iron Man, Clash of the Titans). The soundtrack release date has been pushed back two weeks since our previous announcement and is now scheduled for February 21, 2012. To pre-order the album, visit Amazon. Safe House directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Liam Cunningham, Brendan Gleeson, Robert Patrick and Sam Shepard will be released on February 10 by Universal Pictures. Paul Leonard-Morgan Scoring ‘Dredd’

Paul Leonard-Morgan is scoring the upcoming comic book adaptation Dredd. The film is based on the Judge Dredd comic book series about a powerful cop in Mega City One, a city that runs down the entire east coast of America. The movie stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Jason Cope and Domhnall Gleeson. Pete Travis (Vantage Point) directed the film, but it has been reported that the project’s writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later…, Sunshine) has taken over the editing process due to creative differences. Andrew Macdonald (Sunshine, Trainspotting), Allon Reich (Never Let Me Go) are producing the 3D movie with Garland. The comic book has previously been turned into a movie version starring Sylvester Stallone, which was released in 1995 and featured a score by Alan Silvestri. Randy Newman’s ‘Toy Story 3’ Soundtrack Released on CD

Intrada Records has announced a CD release of the soundtrack for Pixar’s Academy Award-winning hit sequel Toy Story 3. The film’s music is written by Randy Newman. The soundtrack featuring both the film’s score and the songs We Belong Together and the Spanish-language version of You’ve Got A Friend In Me has previously only been available as a digital release from Walt Disney Records. To order the CD version and listen to audio clips, visit Intrada’s online store. Toy Story 3 directed by Lee Unkrich was 2010’s highest grossing movie in the US. A film that is likely to find distribution within the next few days or weeks given its high profile cast and positive critical reaction is the comedy drama Robot and Frank directed by Jake Schreier. The movie stars Frank Langella as an elderly ex-jewel thief who leads a lonely life until his grown children install a robot to care for him, sparking off an unlikely friendship. Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Peter Saarsgard (as the robot’s voice), Jeremy Sisto and Jeremy Strong are co-starring. Christopher Ford has written the screenplay and Galt Niederhoffer (The Romantics), Sam Bisbee, Jackie Kelman Bisbee and Lance Acord (BAFTA-nominated cinematographer for Lost in Translation) are producing.
