Four new movies are opening wide in theaters this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the comedy Ted directed by Seth MacFarlane and starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Giovanni Ribisi and Joel McHale. The film’s score is composed by Walter Murphy (Family Guy, American Dad). Universal Republic has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well the original song Everybody Needs a Best Friend performed by Norah Jones and tracks by Queen, Daphne, Hootie and the Blowfish, Rita Coolidge and Tiffany. Also opening wide is the dramedy Magic Mike directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Cody Horn, Olivia Munn, Matt Bomer, Riley Keough, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Alice Russell, Countre Black, Foreigner, The Unknown, Black Daniel, Cloud Control, Joe Tex, Win Win featuring Blaqstarr and Beth Thornley. ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ Soundtrack Released

A soundtrack album for the indie drama Beasts of the Southern Wild has been released. The album features the film’s original score composed by Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin who also directed the film. The soundtrack is now available digitally on iTunes. Beasts of the Southern Wild starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry revolves around an intrepid six-year-old girl who lives with her father in “the Bathtub,” a southern Delta community at the edge of the world and goes in search of her lost mother. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it has been picked up by Fox Searchlighy for US distribution. The drama opens today in select cities.

Sundance 2012 Film Music Roundup (Part 2)

A film that is likely to find distribution within the next few days or weeks given its high profile cast and positive critical reaction is the comedy drama Robot and Frank directed by Jake Schreier. The movie stars Frank Langella as an elderly ex-jewel thief who leads a lonely life until his grown children install a robot to care for him, sparking off an unlikely friendship. Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Peter Saarsgard (as the robot’s voice), Jeremy Sisto and Jeremy Strong are co-starring. Christopher Ford has written the screenplay and Galt Niederhoffer (The Romantics), Sam Bisbee, Jackie Kelman Bisbee and Lance Acord (BAFTA-nominated cinematographer for Lost in Translation) are producing. The film’s music is written by Francis and the Lights (aka Francis Farewell Starlit). The project marks the singer/songwriter’s first film music project.
