Weekly Film Music Roundup (August 14, 2015)

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the biographical drama Straight Outta Compton directed by F. Gary Gray and starring O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren, Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella and Paul Giamatti as N.W.A.’s manager Jerry Heller. The film’s original score is composed by Joseph Trapanese (Insurgent, Oblivion, Earth to Echo). Dr. Dre has released his first record in 16 years inspired by the movie last Friday. Also opening wide is the film adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Jared Harris and Hugh Grant. Daniel Pemberton (Steve Jobs, The Counselor) has composed the film’s original music. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by artists including Roberta Flack, Nina Simone, Peppino Gagliardi, Louis Prima & more. ‘Mistress America’ Soundtrack Details

Milan Records will release a soundtrack album for Noah Baumbach’s indie comedy Mistress America. The album features the film’s original music composed by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips who previously scored the director’s The Squid and the Whale. Also included are songs by Paul McCartney, Suicide, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and Hot Chocolate. The soundtrack will be released on August 14, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Mistress America is co-written by Baumbach & Greta Gerwig who also stars in the film as Lola Kirke, a lonely college freshman in New York who is rescued from her solitude by her soon-to-be stepsister, an adventurous gal about town who entangles her in alluringly mad schemes.

Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips Scoring Noah Baumbach’s ‘Mistress America’

Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips are reuniting with director Noah Baumbach to score the upcoming indie comedy Mistress America. The movie starring Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke follows a lonely college freshman in New York who is rescued from her solitude by her soon-to-be stepsister, an adventurous gal about town who entangles her in alluringly mad schemes. Baumbach has also co-written the screenplay with Gerwig. Both are also producing the project with Scott Rudin (The Social Network, Moonrise Kingdom, Captain Phillips, No Country for Old Men), Lila Yacoub (While We’re Young) and Rodrigo Teixeira (Night Moves).

Guaranteed to top the weekend box office is the final part in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 directed by Bill Condon and starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. The film’s music is composed by Carter Burwell. Summit Entertainment, Chop Shop Records and Atlantic Records have released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from and inspired by the film by artists including Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding, Green Day and Feist. Opening in limited release is the comedy drama Silver Linings Playbook directed by David O. Russell and starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Julia Stiles, Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker. Danny Elfman has composed the film’s score. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack featuring the songs featured in the film by Stevie Wonder, Alabama Shakes, alt-K, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Rare Earth and Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash, as well as two tracks by Elfman. Sundance 2012 Film Music Roundup (Part 3)

Also check out Part 1 and Part 2 of our roundup of the music and composers of the movies premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Among the documentaries that premiered at this year’s festival is Finding North directed by Kristi Jacobson (Toots) and Lori Silverbush. The film examines the issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity. Both directors are also producing the movie with Julie Goldman (Buck) and Ryan Harrington (American Teen). T Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars have written the documentary’s music. The project marks Burnett’s first documentary credit as a composer. He has previously contributed music to a number of high profile films, including Crazy Heart, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Walk the Line and the upcoming The Hunger Games.
