Two new movies are opening in wide release this week:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the found footage horror film Paranormal Activity 4 directed by Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman, produced by Jason Blum & Oren Peli and starring Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively, Aiden Lovekamp, Brady Allen, Stephen Dunham, Alexondra Lee and Katie Featherston. As the previous three movies in the series, Paranormal Activity 4 doesn’t feature an original score and no soundtrack has been released. The sequel follows a suburban family who witness strange events in their neighborhood when a woman and a mysterious child move in. To find out more about the film, visit the official movie website.

Also opening wide is the thriller Alex Cross directed by Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) and starring Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Edward Burns, Rachel Nichols and Jean Reno. The film’s score is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2). Five new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the political thriller Argo directed by Ben Affleck who also stars in the film with Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Victor Garber, Tate Donavan, Clea DuVall, Scoot McNairy, Rory Cochran, Christopher Denham, Chris Messina and Kyle Chandler. The film’s music is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Also opening wide is the horror thriller Sinister directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Fred Dalton Thompson, James Ransone, Clare Foley and Vincent D’Onofrio. Christopher Young (Hellraiser, Spider-Man 3) has composed the film’s score. A soundtrack album featuring Young’s music is now available digitally and will be released on CD on October 30. Neil Finn to Provide End Credits Song for ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’

TheOneRing.Net (via The Playlist) is reporting that Neil Finn will be providing the end credits song for Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Finn is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of Crowded House. All of the previous Lord of the Rings films featured original songs in the end credits, including May It Be performed by Enya in The Fellowship of the Ring, Gollum’s Song by Emiliana Torrini in The Two Towers and Into the West by Annie Lennox in The Return of the King. No more details about the songs have been revealed yet. The soundtrack for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey featuring the film’s original music composed by Howard Shore will be released in the US by WaterTower Music.

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the action thriller Taken 2 directed by Olivier Megaton and starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen and Rade Šerbedžija. The film’s music is composed by Nathaniel Mechaly who previously scored the 2008 original film. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by artists including Phoebe Killdeer and the Short Straws, Kasbah Rockers and College & Electric Youth has been released digitally earlier this week. Also opening wide is the stop-motion animated 3D film Frankenweenie directed by Tim Burton and featuring the voices of Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short and Winona Ryder. The film’s score is composed by Danny Elfman. Walt Disney Records has released two soundtracks, including an album featuring the composer’s score. Adele Confirmed for ‘Skyfall’ Theme Song

Adele confirmed today that she has co-written and performed the theme song for the latest James Bond film Skyfall. The song is written by the English singer/songwriter and Paul Hepworth (Rolling in the Deep) and was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. Hepworth is also credited as the arranger with J.A.C. Redford on the sheet music of the song that Adele posted on Twitter this morning (see image attached after the jump). Redford is best known as a composer for films and TV shows including St. Elsewhere and as an orchestrator for such composers as James Horner and Skyfall‘s composer Thomas Newman. The song will be available on Adele’s official site on Friday. The single is also available for pre-order on iTunes. More information about the soundtrack album featuring Newman’s score are expected to be published soon.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Hotel Transylvania directed by Genndy Tartakov and featuring the voice talent of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade, CeeLo Green and Jon Lovitz. The film’s music is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh who previously scored Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The film’s original song Problem performed by Becky G feat. will.i.am is now available to download on iTunes. No full soundtrack album has been announced yet. To learn more about the film, visit the official movie website.

Also opening wide is the sci-fi thriller Looper directed by Rian Johnson and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, Noah Segan and Piper Perabo. The film’s score is composed by Nathan Johnson who previously worked with the director on Brick and The Brothers Bloom. Cut Narrative has released the soundtrack album digitally and limited edition CD version featuring music not included on the digital release is available on La-La Land Records. Robert Kraft to Exit Fox Music

Robert Kraft is leaving Fox Music after 18 years with the studio. He joined Fox Music in 1994 as chief executive and became president in 1998. He has overseen and the music for all Fox films during that time including the scores and soundtracks for such hit films as Titanic, Avatar, Moulin Rouge!, Slumdog Millionaire, Black Swan and Walk the Line. He also supervised the music for Fox Television productions, including such hit shows as The X-Files, 24, Ally McBeal and The Simpsons. Kraft has also produced and written numerous songs for film and was Academy Award-, Golden Globe- and Grammy-nominated for co-writing the song Beautiful Maria of My Soul with Arne Glimcher for 1992’s The Mambo Kings.

Andy Williams (1927-2012)

Andy Williams passed away Tuesday at his Branson, Mo., home at age 84  after suffering from bladder cancer. The American singer performed numerous songs for movies and collaborated with a number of film composers. Among his biggest hits was the Academy Award-winning song Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which was written by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. Williams also collaborated with Mancini on such films as Blake Edward’s 1962’s drama Days of Wine and Roses starring Jack Lemmon and 1964’s comedy Dear Heart starring Glenn Ford. The singer also performed the classic song Where Do I Begin? from Love Story with music by Francis Lai and lyrics by Carl Sigman.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the drama Trouble with the Curve directed by Robert Lorenz and starring Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Matthew Lillard and Scott Eastwood. The film’s score is written by Academy Award-nominated composer Marco Beltrami (3:10 to Yuma, Scream). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring Beltrami’s score digitally earlier this week. A physical version is scheduled to come out on October 16. Also opening wide is the action thriller End of Watch written and directed by David Ayer and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, David Harbour and Cody Horn. David Sardy (21, Zombieland, Premium Rush) has composed the film’s score. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as a number of songs from the film including Public Enemy’s new track Harder Than You Think. Javier Navarrete, Paul Englishby and John Lunn Win Emmy Awards

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards were handed out this afternoon at the NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles. Javier Navarrete won his first Emmy Award for his score for HBO’s original movie Hemingway & Gellhorn in the Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Original Dramatic Score) category. John Lunn received the award for his music for Downtown Abbey in the Outstandig Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) category. Paul Englishby also received his first Emmy in the Outstanding Main Title Theme Music category for his theme for BBC’s Page Eight directed by David Hare and starring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes.
