Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is Universal Pictures’ action tentpole Battleship directed by Peter Berg and starring Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Hamish Linklater and Rihanna. The film’s music is composed by Steve Jablonsky (Transformers). Varese Sarabande Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the ensemble comedy ensemble What to Expect When You’re Expecting directed by Kirk Jones and starring Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock and Rodrigo Santoro. Mark Mothersbaugh has composed the film’s original score. A soundtrack album featuring the movie’s songs by artists including Chiddy Bang, The Human League, Kinky, Sleeper Agent, Black Lips, Robert Palmer and David Gray has been released by Capitol Records. Stephen Warbeck to Score ‘Henry IV’

Stephen Warbeck is currently recording his score for the upcoming BBC adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play Henry IV. The television production is directed by Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal, Iris) and stars Jeremy Irons in the title role, as well as Tom Hiddleston as Prince Hal and Simon Russell Beale as Falstaff. Sam Mendes (American Beauty), Neal Street Production’s Pippa Harris (Starter for Ten) and NBC Universal’s Gareth Neame (Downtown Abbey) are executive producing and Rupert Ryle-Hodges (Cranford) is co-producing the project. Warbeck has previously scored the Eyre’s drama The Other Man starring Laura Linney and Antonio Banderas. Henry IV is one of BBC’s three new adaptations of Shakespeare’s second historical tetralogy and will be premiering in two parts this summer in the UK to coincide with the 2012 Cultural Olympiad – the largest celebration of culture in the history of the modern Olympics and Paralympics.

While no new movies are opening wide this week, a couple of new films are receiving a release in select cities:

The highest profile title among this week’s openings is The Iron Lady directed by Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep as former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Thomas Newman has composed the original score for the movie. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as a song from the musical The King and I, a track from the opera Norma and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C Major. Also opening in limited release is the drama Pariah written and directed by Dee Rees about a 17-year-old African-American woman in Brooklyn struggling with her sexuality. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s songs from artists such as as Tamar-kali and Sparlha Swa. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the 3D action adventure Immortals directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz and John Hurt. The film’s music is composed by Trevor Morris. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the historical drama J. Edgar directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench, Stephen Root, Josh Lucas, Dermot Mulroney and Jeffrey Donovan. Eastwood has also written the score for the film. No soundtrack album has been announced, but the score can be listened to on Warner Bros’ Awards website. ‘Polisse’ Soundtrack By Stephen Warbeck Released

L’R du Trésor has released a soundtrack album for the French social satire Polisse. The album features the original score by Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love), as well as four songs from the movie by Anne Germain, Breakbot, Keedz and Urban Species. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon and audio clips from each track can be checked out below. Polisse is directed by Maïwenn Le Besco who also stars in the film as a journalist working on a story about the lives of cops assigned to a Paris juvenile division. The movie premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and has been picked up for domestic distribution by Sundance Selects.

‘Princess Kaiulani’ Soundtrack Announced

MovieScore Media has announced a soundtrack release for last year’s historical drama Princess Kaiulani. The album features the original score from the film composed by Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love). The music is performed by the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. The soundtrack will be released on CD and digitally on October 11, 2011. Princess Kaiulani is the feature directing debut of Marc Forby and tells the true story of Princess Ka’iulani’s attempts to maintain the independence of Hawaii against the threat of American colonization at the end of the 19th century. Q’orianka Kilcher stars as the princess, and Barry Pepper, Will Patton, Tamzin Merchant and Julian Glover are co-starring.

Three new movies are opening nationwide and this weekend:

The comic book adaptation Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo and Stellan Skarsgaard is expected to top the weekend box office. Patrick Doyle has composed the score for the film and a soundtrack has been released on Buena Vista Records. Check out our announcement for details on the album and audio clips. Also opening wide is the comedy Jumping the Broom directed by Salim Akil and starring Angela Bassett, Paula Patton, Laz Alonso, Loretta Devine, Mike Epps and Julie Bowen. Edward Shearmur composed the film’s score and a soundtrack with both score and songs from the film has been released earlier this week by Madison Gate Records. Cannes 2011 Film Music Preview

With the line-up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival announced this past week, we’re going to take a look at a couple of films set to premiere at the festival that haven’t been covered yet on this page. We already reported about three films that are competing at the festival taking place from May 11 to May 22. Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life with music by Alexandre Desplat already has a soundtrack scheduled to come out next month a couple days before the film’s domestic opening. Also, Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin That I Inhabit (La Piel que habito) features music by Alberto Iglesias and is set for a release this fall by Sony Pictures Classics. And the indie drama We Need to Talk About Kevin starring Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly and scored by Jonny Greenwood is still awaiting a domestic release date.

Stephen Warbeck’s Upcoming Projects

Stephen Warbeck has a number of movies coming out this year. Premiering at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival in a few weeks is the drama Angels Crest. The film stars Jeremy Piven, Elizabeth McGovern, Kate Walsh, Thomas Dekker and Mira Sorvino. The movie centers on a young father who loses his son, throwing the community into disarray at the time of Waska – the first snowfall of the year. Angels Crest is directed by Gaby Dellal who previously worked with Warbeck on the 2005 drama On a Clearer Day starring Peter Mullan and Brenda Blethyn. No release date has been set yet for the independent movie.

Ramin Djawadi taking over ‘Game of Thrones’

TV Squad reports that Ramin Djawadi has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming HBO series Game of Thrones. He is replacing composer Stephen Warbeck who was originally scoring the project as reported last year. The fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire stars Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey and will have its premiere on April 17, 2011 on HBO.
