Only one movie is opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the other films in release at the box office is the action comedy 21 Jump Street directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson and Ellie Kemper. The film’s score is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh who previously collaborated with the director’s on their animated feature hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Opening in limited release is the Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi Padre directed by Matt Piedmont and starring Will Ferrell, Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Genesis Rodriguez, Nick Offerman & Pedro Armendariz, Jr. Andrew Feltenstein & John Nau have written the film’s score. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring selections from the score, as well Christina Aguilera’s title song earlier this week. Mark Mothersbaugh to Score the Lego Movie

Mark Mothersbaugh announced at the SXSW Festival (via The Playlist) that he will be scoring Warner Bros. Pictures’ animated feature film Lego. The movie written and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller will incorporate the latest animation and photo-real techniques. Chris McKay (Robot Chicken) is involved as a co-director and Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) and Roy Lee (How to Train Your Dragon, The Strangers) are producing. Jill Wilfert is executive producing for the Lego Company and Seanne Winslow is co-producing for Lynn Pictures. No plot details have been revealed yet, but the movie is said to feature both Lego-licensed and original characters. Mothersbaugh has scored the directors’ last two movies, including the animated hit Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and the action comedy 21 Jump Street, which is being released in theaters this weekend and was shown at SXSW.

Mark Mothersbaugh Scoring ‘House of Lies’

Mark Mothersbaugh has written the score for the new Showtime original series House of Lies. The dark comedy created by Matthew Carnahan (Dirt) is based on Martin Kihn’s book House of Lies: How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Then Tell You the Time. The series stars Don Cheadle as a self-loathing management consultant who will use any means to get the information his clients need. Kristen Bell, Dawn Olivieri, Ben Schwartz, Josh Lawson, Donis Leonard Jr., Richard Schiff and Glynn Turman are co-starring. Carnahan is executive producing the comedy with Jessika Borsiczky (Flash Forward) and Stephen Hopkins (24, The Ghost and the Darkness) who also directed the pilot episode.

Fall 2011 Television Music Roundup (Part 6): Cable

In our sixth and final part of our fall television series, we are taking a look at the major new shows on the cable networks:

One of this fall’s most talked about new shows is American Horror Story created by Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk and starring Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga and Denis O’Hare. The series has recently received two Golden Globe nominations for Best TV Drama and for Lange’s performance. The show’s score is composed by James Levine who has worked on most of Murphy’s projects in the last decade, including Nip/Tuck, Glee and the feature film Running with Scissors. The drama has also been using a lot of pre-existing score music from composers such as Bernard Herrmann and Alan Silvestri. The series’ opening theme is written by Charlie Clouser (Saw, Numbers) and sound designer Cesar Davila-Irizarry. Visit EW.com for more information and to watch the opening credits sequence.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action adventure sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams,Stephen Fry, Jared Harris and Noomi Rapace. The film’s music is written by Hans Zimmer and produced by Zimmer & Lorne Balfe. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Mark Mothersbaugh is currently scoring the action comedy 21 Jump Street. The film based on the 80s TV series starring Johnny Depp is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller who previously collaborated with the composer on the 2009 animated hit film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. 21 Jump Street stars Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson and Ellie Kemper. The film revolves around two undercover police officers who go undercover in a high school in order to bust a drug ring. Jonah Hill co-wrote the project’s screenplay with Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World). The movie is produced by Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious, I Am Legend and Stephen J. Cannell (The A-Team).

Mark Mothersbaugh to Score ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked’

Mark Mothersbaugh has been tapped to score Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked. The movie is directed by Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forver After, Sky High) and stars Jason Lee, David Cross, Jenny Slate, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Anna Faris and Christina Applegate. In the film, the Chipmunks are turning a luxury cruise liner into their personal playground, until they become ‘chipwrecked’ on a remote island. Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (Kung Fu Panda, Monsters vs Aliens) have written the project’s screenplay. Mothersbaugh’s music is scheduled to be recorded next month. The previous two Alvin and the Chipmunks movies were scored by Christopher Lennertz and David Newman.

Mark Mothersbaugh Scoring HBO’s ‘Enlightened’

Mark Mothersbaugh has written the score for the upcoming HBO comedy Enlightened. The show stars Laura Dern as as a health and beauty executive who has a terrible public breakdown and, after some rehab and meditation, must come back from the hardship to try to live a more illuminated existence. Diane Ladd, Luke Wilson and Timm Sharp are co-starring. The comedy is created by Mike White (The School of Rock, Nacho Libre). Enlightened is set to premiere on October 10, 2011 and will be airing every Monday night on HBO.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

The comedy Arthur directed by Jason Winer and starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner and Greta Gerwig features music by Theodore Shapiro. A soundtrack with songs from the movie has been released earlier this week by WaterTower Music. No word on a release of Shapiro’s score. Also coming out this week is the family drama Soul Surfer starring AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt. The film’s score is by Marco Beltrami and has been released by Madison Gate Records as reported here. The album can be downloaded on iTunes. A separate soundtrack with songs from the film has been released by Rhino Records this Tuesday.

Mark Mothersbaugh to Score ‘Safe’

Film Music Reporter has learned that Mark Mothersbaugh has been hired to score the upcoming crime thriller Safe. In the movie, a former elite agent rescues a young Chinese girl carrying vital secrets that both the Chinese and Russian Mafia are intent on obtaining in order to blackmail world governments. The film starring Jason Statham, Chris Sarandon and Robert John Burke is directed by Boaz Yakin. Yakin previously worked with composers Trevor Rabin (Remember the Titans), Joel McNeely (Uptown Girls), Lesley Barber (A Price Above Rubies, Death in Love) and Stewart Copeland (Fresh) on his earlier movies. The film is produced by Lawrence Bender (producer on all Quentin Tarantino-directed movies), as well as Dana Brunetti and Kevin Spacey (The Social Network) through their company Trigger Street Productions.
