alexander-and-the-terrible-dayOpening in most theaters is the family comedy Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day directed by Miguel Arteta and starring Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner, Dylan Minnette, Ed Oxenbould, Kerris Dorsey, Megan Mullally, Jennifer Coolidge and Bella Thorne. The film’s original music is composed by Christophe Beck (Frozen, Edge of Tomorrow, The Hangover). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring a suite from the score, as well as songs by The Vamps, Justine Dorsey,  The Narwhals, Charles William and IDK & The Whatevs. Check out our previous news article for the full album details and to learn more about the film.

the-judgeAlso opening wide is the drama The Judge directed by David Dobkin and starring Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton and Vincent D’Onofrio. Thomas Newman (American Beauty, Skyfall, The Shawshank Redemption, Finding Nemo) has composed the film’s original music. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’ Soundtrack Details

alexander-and-the-terrible-dayWalt Disney Records will release a soundtrack album for the family comedy Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The album features the songs from the film, including the new tracks Hurricane by The Vamps, Best Worst Day by Justine Dorsey, as well as songs by The Narwhals, Charles William and IDK & The Whatevs. Also included is a suite from the film’s original score composed by Christophe Beck (Frozen, Edge of Tomorrow, The Hangover, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The soundtrack will be released on October 7, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Alexander is directed by Miguel Arteta (Cedar Rapids, The Good Girl) and stars Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner, Dylan Minnette, Ed Oxenbould, Kerris Dorsey, Megan Mullally, Jennifer Coolidge and Bella Thorne. The movie follows a boy who has a very horrible day and finds out that other people can have them too.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

imageOpening in most theaters is the action sequel The Expendables 3 directed by Patrick Hughes and starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film’s music is composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Fast & Furious, Thor: The Dark World) who previously scored the first two installments in the series. Lionsgate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this werk and La-La Land Records will release a CD version later this month. Silva Screen Records is handling distribution of the soundtrack overseas. Check out our previous news article for the full album details.

imageAlso opening wide is the sci-fi drama The Giver directed by Phillip Noyce and starring Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Taylor Swift, Cameron Monaghan, Emma Tremblay and Katie Holmes. Marco Beltrami (Scream, World War Z) has composed the film’s original score. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Christophe Beck Scoring Daniel Barnz’s ‘Cake’

cakeChristophe Beck has composed the music for the upcoming drama Cake. The film is directed by Daniel Barnz and stars Jennifer Aniston, Anna Kendrick, William H. Macy, Adriana Barraza, Felicity Huffman, Sam Worthington, Chris Messina and Mamie Gummer. The movie follows a woman in a chronic-pain support group who begins to investigate the suicide of a fellow group member and develops an unexpected relationship with the woman’s husband. Patrick Tobin has written the screenplay. Ben Barnz, Mark Canton, Kristin Hahn, Courtney Solomon are producing the Cinelou Films production. Beck has previously scored Barnz’s 2008 feature Phoebe in Wonderland starring Elle Fanning.

Christophe Beck to Score Andrew Niccol’s ‘Good Kill’

good-killChristophe Beck has been tapped to score the upcoming drama Good Kill. The film is written and directed by Andrew Niccol and stars Ethan Hawke, January Jones, Zoe Kravitz, Jake Abel and Bruce Greenwood. The movie follows a troubled Air Force officer who is charged with directing drone strikes and enters a moral minefield as the rationale for targeting purported terrorists becomes ever more murky. Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker, The Company You Keep), Zev Foreman and Mark Amin (Filth) are producing the Voltage Pictures production. Beck has previously co-scored the indie drama Charlie Countryman for Voltage.

2nd Annual Superhero Music Panel at Comic-Con Announced

comic-conThe line-up of the 2nd Annual Superhero Music Panel has been announced. Six leading Hollywood composers will discuss the process of creating the musical voice behind the superhero, explain the challenges when bringing a comic book character or story to life and writing music to reflect the story line. The panelists will also show film clips of their work. Participating composers include Brian Tyler who scored Marvel’s two features in 2013, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World and is set to score the biggest movie of his career to date, Avengers: Age of Ultron, John Ottman who most recently composed the music and edited X-Men: Days of Future Past and has previously worked on X2 and the two The Fantastic Four features, as well as Tyler Bates who has Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy coming up and whose previous credits include 300 and Watchmen.

Christophe Beck to Return for ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’

hot-tub-time-machineChristophe Beck confirmed in a recent interview with We Are Movie Geeks that he is returning to score the upcoming comedy sequel Hot Tub Time Machine 2. The film reunites director Steve Pink (About Last Night, Accepted), screenwriter Josh Heald and actors Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Chevy Chase. They are joined by new cast members Adam Scott and Gillian Jacobs. In the sequel, Nick, Lou and Jacob attempt to go back to the past, but inadvertently end up ten years in the future, which they must alter if they want to save their present-day environment. Andrew Panay (Wedding Crashers) is producing the MGM production. Beck previously scored the 2010 original film.

‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Soundtrack Details

edge-of-tomorrowWaterTower Music has announced a soundtrack album for the sci-fi action thriller Edge of Tomorrow. The album features the film’s original music composed by Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Muppets, The Hangover, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The soundtrack will be released on June 3, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from the score after the jump. Edge of Tomorrow is directed by Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic and Franz Drameh. The movie is set in the near future when an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault and follows an officer who finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed. The thriller will be released nationwide on June 6, 2014 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Hollywood Composers Discuss Music for Action Movies at Newport Beach Film Festival

newport-beachThis past Sunday, the Newport Beach Film Festival Seminar Series presented the composer panel Lights, Camera, Action – Music for Action Films (and other genres).  Tim Greiving moderated a panel of film composers who – challenged with the on-screen fights and explosions – offered insight into how the score works in harmony with the film’s visual elements, sound effects and getting all the elements to co-exist. Participating composers included Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Hangover) who discussed the challenges of scoring this summer’s Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise. Christopher Young (Spider-Man 3, Entrapment) talked about his music for this year’s Chinese martial arts action movie The Monkey King, which became one the nation’s highest grossing film at the local box office.
