Weekly Film Music Roundup (May 20, 2016)

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the animated feature The Angry Birds Movie directed by Fergal Reilly & Clay Kaytis and starring Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Kate McKinnon and Keegan-Michael Key. The film’s original music is composed by Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Minions, The Smurfs). Atlantic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film, as well as a separate soundtrack featuring Pereira’s score. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising directed by Nicholas Stoller and starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Chloë Grace Moretz, Dave Franco, Ike Barinholtz, Carla Gallo, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kiersey Clemons and Beanie Feldstein. Michael Andrews (Bridesmaids, Donnie Darko, Bad Teacher, Funny People) who previously scored the 2014 original film has composed the film’s original score. Back Lot Music has released two songs from the film, Black Skinhead by Jacques Slade, THURZ & El Prez, and Party in My Pants by Kill the Giant. Check out our previous article for more information.

‘Almost Holy’ Soundtrack EP Released

Sacred Bones Records has released a soundtrack EP for the documentary Almost Holy. The EP features three tracks from the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Atticus Ross (Gone Girl, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Leopold Ross (The Book of Eli) & Bobby Krlic (Triple 9). The soundtrack is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also check out audio clips. Almost Holy centers on Gennadiy Mokhnenko, a controversial pastor who made a name for himself by forcibly removing homeless drug-addicted kids from the streets of Mariupol, Ukraine and housing them in his own self-styled rehab facility.

TNT’s ‘Animal Kingdom’ to Feature Theme by Atticus Ross & Score by Alexis & Sam

Atticus Ross is composing the main titles theme for the upcoming TNT original series Animal Kingdom. Alexis & Sam are scoring the show developed by Jonathan Lisco (Southland, Halt and Catch Fire) and starring Ellen Barkin, Scott Speedman and Shawn Hatosy. The drama is inspired by the 2010 Australian feature of the same title directed by David Michôd and follows the matriarch of a Southern California family whose excessive lifestyle is fueled by their criminal activities.

The film’s original music is composed by Marco Beltrami (Scream, 3:10 to Yuma, The Wolverine, The Hurt Locker). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the sports comedy drama Eddie the Eagle directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Egerton, Christopher Walken, Hugh Jackman, Jo Hartley, Tim McInnerny and Ania Sowinski. Matthew Margeson (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass 2) has composed the film’s original score. Varese Sarabande will release the composer’s music next month. ‘Triple 9’ Soundtrack Details

BFD Records will release a soundtrack album for John Hillcoat’s thriller Triple 9. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Claudia Sarne & Leopold Ross (The Book of Eli, Broken City) and Bobby Krlic. Also included is a remix of Cypress Hills’ Pigs by Ross. The soundtrack will be released digitally on February 26, 2016 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Triple 9 is directed by Hillcoat (Lawless, The Proposition) and stars Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson and Kate Winslet. The movie follows a gang of criminals and corrupt cops who plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull of their biggest heist yet across town.

‘Love & Mercy’ Soundtrack Announced

Capitol Records has announced a soundtrack album for the biographical drama Love & Mercy. The album features the film’s original score composed by Academy Award winner Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo). Also included is the song One Kind of Love, written and recorded by Brian Wilson specifically for the film, several original Beach Boys classics and Paul Dano’s performance of God Only Knows. The soundtrack will be released digitally this Friday, August 14 and physically on September 18, 2015. Visit Amazon to pre-order the CD. Love & Mercy is directed by Bill Pohlad and stars John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti.

Atticus Ross to Score Cinemax’s ‘Outcast’

Fox International Studios announced this week that Atticus Ross has been hired to score the upcoming Cinemax original series Outcast. The show is based on the Skybound/Image comic title by creator Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and artist Paul Azaceta and follows a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and, with the help of a preacher with personal demons of his own, embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. The drama stars Patrick Fugit, Philip Glenister and Gabriel Bateman.

Johann Johannsson, Trent Reznor, Jonny Greenwood, Tyler Bates, Christopher Lennertz & More Invited to Join Academy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 322 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures to join the organization. Among the invited artists this year a number of film composers, including Johann Johannsson (Prisoners, Sicario) who received his first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his music for The Theory of Everything, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross who received the Oscar in 2011 for their work on David Fincher’s The Social Network and recently reunited with the director on Gone Girl, Tyler Bates whose film scoring credits include last year’s hit film Guardians of the Galaxy, Jonny Greenwood whose film music work include Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood, The Master and Inherent Vice and Christopher Lennertz whose recent feature credits include Ride Along, Horrible Bosses 2 and The Wedding Ringer.

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action comedy Spy directed by Jude Law and starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Miranda Hart and Jude Law. The film’s original music is composed by Theodore Shapiro (The Devil Wears Prada, Tropic Thunder). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Who Can You Trust, which he co-wrote with Craig Wedren and is performed Ivy Levan. The only wide release this weekend is Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron written and directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johannson, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany and Cobie Smulders. The film’s original music is composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Furious 7) and Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, Batman). Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score earlier this week. Check out our previous article for the full album details.
