The movie is written and directed by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, American Crime) and stars Regina King in the title role, alongside Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Christina Jackson, André Holland, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown and Terrence Howard. The biographical drama tells the story of trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the U.S.

Tamar-kali (Mudbound, Shirley, The Assistant, Palmer, Come Sunday, The Lie) has composed the original score for the new Netflix original film Mixtape. The movie is directed by Valerie Weiss (The Archer, Losing Control) and stars Gemma Brooke Allen, Audrey Hsieh, Olga Petsa, Julie Bowen, Jackson Rathbone and Nick Thune. The coming-of-age drama is set in 1999 and follows a 12-year old girl who discovers a broken mixtape made by her late parents and sets out to find the songs – and learn more about her mom and dad.

Premiering on Wednesday, January 28, is the Australian drama Penguin Bloom directed by Glendyn Ivin and starring Naomi Watts, Andrew Lincoln, Jacki Weaver, Griffin Murray-Johnston, Rachel House, Leeanna Walsman, Lisa Hensley, Felix Cameron and Abe Clifford-Barr. Tamar-kali (Mudbound, Shirley, The Assistant, Come Sunday, The Lie) has composed the original score for the upcoming drama Palmer. The film is directed by Fisher Stevens (Before the Flood, Stand Up Guys) and stars Justin Timberlake, Juno Temple, Alisha Wainwright, June Squibb and Ryder Allen. The movie revolves around a ormer high school football star who went from hometown hero to convicted felon as he returns home to Louisiana, where he moves back in with his grandmother who raised him and forms an unlikely bond with an outcast boy from a troubled home. Cheryl Guerriero (Pledge This!) wrote the screenplay.

Milan Records will release the official soundtrack album for the drama Shirley. The album features the film’s original music composed by Tamar-kali (Mudbound, The Assistant, Come Sunday, The Last Thing He Wanted, The Lie). The soundtrack will be released digitally next Friday, June 5 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Shirley is directed by Josephine Decker and stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young and Logan Lerman. The movie tells the story of a middle-aged couple that moves in with renowned horror writer Shirley Jackson and her husband in the hopes of starting a new life and find themselves fodder for a psycho-drama that inspires Jackson’s next major novel.
Tamar-kali Scoring Dawn Porter’s ‘John Lewis: Good Trouble’
Tamar-kali (Mudbound, Come Sunday) has composed the original music for the upcoming documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble. The film is directed by Dawn Porter (Trapped, Gideon’s Army) and focuses on the life and career of Rep. John Lewis. The movie chronicles Lewis’ 60-plus years of social activism and legislative action on civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration. Porter is also producing the CNN Films, AGC Studios and TIME Studios production with Laura Michalchyshyn (Trailer Park Boys) for Trilogy Films, alongside Erika Alexander & Ben Arnon for Color Farm Media.
