Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in the US and select international territories is the sci-fi action monster movie Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman. The film’s music is composed by Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, which also features former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and singer Priscilla as soloists. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel Grown Ups 2 directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello and Nick Swardson. The film’s original score is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Over the Hedge, Click, Bee Movie) who previously scored the 2010 original film. No soundtrack album has been announced. Premiering tonight is the new Showtime series Ray Donovan created by Ann Biderman (Primal Fear, Southland) and starring Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, Paula Malcomson, Eddie Marsan, Katherine Moennig, Dash Mihok, Kerris Dorsey, Pooch Hall, Steven Bauer and Devon Bagby. The show’s score is composed by Marcelo Zarvos (The Words, The Big C, The Good Shepherd). The drama follows a go-to guy who makes the problems of LA’s celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear and experiences his own problems when his father is unexpectedly released from prison. ‘The Hot Flashes’ to Feature Music by Marcelo Zarvos

Marcelo Zarvos has composed the score for the upcoming comedy The Hot Flashes. The film is directed by Susan Seidelman (Desperately Seeking Susan, She-Devil) and stars Brooke Shields, Wanda Sykes, Virginia Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Camryn Manheim, Mark Povinelli and Eric Roberts. The movie follows an unlikely group of middle-aged women who challenge the high school girls’ state basketball champs to raise money for a mobile breast cancer screening unit. Brad Henning wrote the screenplay and is also producing the project with Nina Henderson Moore (Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day) and Seidelman. Vertical Entertainment has picked up domestic rights for The Hot Flashes and will release the film on June 14, 2013 on VOD and in select theaters on July 12.

Premiering tonight is the HBO original movie Phil Spector written and directed by David Mamet and starring Al Pacino the t he legendary music producer and Helen Mirren as his defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden. Jeffrey Tambor, James Tolkan and Martin Jarvis are co-starring. The film’s original score is composed by Marcelo Zarvos who has previously scored a number of HBO films, including You Don’t Know Jack for Barry Levinson who is executive producing Phil Spector. Marcelo Zarvos to Score Showtime’s ‘Ray Donovan’

Marcelo Zarvos is currently scoring the upcoming Showtime original series Ray Donovan. The drama is created by Ann Biderman (Southland, Primal Fear) and stars Liev Schreiber in the title role as a go-to guy who makes the problems of LA’s celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear and experiences his own problems when his father, played by Jon Voight, is unexpectedly released from prison. Paula Malcomson, Eddie Marsan, Katherine Moennig, Dash Mihok, Kerris Dorsey, Pooch Hall, Steven Bauer and Devon Bagby are co-starring. Biderman is executive producing the show with Mark Gordon (Source Code, Grey’s Anatomy) and Bryan Zuriff (The Details). Allen Coulter has directed the pilot episode. Zarvos has previously scored the 2006 drama Hollywoodland starring Ben Affleck and 2010’s Remember Me starring Robert Pattinson for the director.

‘The Bay’ Soundtrack Details

Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album for Barry Levinson’s horror thriller The Bay. The album features the film’s original score composed by Marcelo Zarvos (The Words, The Good Shepherd) who previously collaborated with the director on What Just Happened? and HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack. The soundtrack will be released digitally on November 20, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on iTunes. Check back on this site for audio clips. The Bay starring Will Rogers and Christopher Denham is set in a small Maryland town and takes place after an ecological disaster occurs. The film premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and was released in select theaters and on VOD earlier this month.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the animated feature Wreck-It-Ralph directed by Rich Moore and featuring the voice talent of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch. The film’s score is composed by Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as one track by Skrillex who wrote some of the in-game music and other songs featured in the film. Attached to the film is the animated short Paperman, which features an original score by Christophe Beck.

Also opening wide is the drama director Robert Zemeckis and starring Denzel Washington, Kelly Reilly, Don Cheadle, Bruce Greenwood, John Goodman, Melissa Leo and James Badge Dale. The director’s regular musical collaborator Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, The Avengers) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been released yet, but the score is available to listen to on Paramount Pictures’ Awards website. For more information about the film, visit our previous article. Marcelo Zarvos Scoring ‘Look of Love’

Marcelo Zarvos is currently scoring the romantic drama Look of Love. The film is directed by Arie Posin and stars Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Robin Williams, Amy Brenneman and Jess Weixler. The movie centers on a widow who meets a man looking exactly like her dead husband, and that connection rekindles old feelings. Posin has also co-written the screenplay with Matthew McDuffie. Julie Lynn (Mother and Child) and Bonnie Curtis (Albert Nobbs) are producing the Mockingbird Pictures production. Posin previously collaborated with composer James Horner on his first directorial effort, The Chumbscrubber.

Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Hotel Transylvania directed by Genndy Tartakov and featuring the voice talent of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade, CeeLo Green and Jon Lovitz. The film’s music is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh who previously scored Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The film’s original song Problem performed by Becky G feat. will.i.am is now available to download on iTunes. No full soundtrack album has been announced yet. Also opening wide is the sci-fi thriller Looper directed by Rian Johnson and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, Noah Segan and Piper Perabo. The film’s score is composed by Nathan Johnson who previously worked with the director on Brick and The Brothers Bloom. Cut Narrative has released the soundtrack album digitally and limited edition CD version featuring music not included on the digital release is available on La-La Land Records. ‘Won’t Back Down’ Soundtrack Details

Lakeshore Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the drama Won’t Back Down. The album features the film’s original score composed by Marcelo Zarvos (The Door in the Floor, Remember Me). The soundtrack will be released digitally on October 3, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the album after the jump. Won’t Back Down is directed by Daniel Barnz who previously collaborated with Zarvos on last year’s Beastly and stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis as two mothers who channel frustration into action and join forces to transform an inner-city public school in Pittsburgh. Holly Hunter, Lance Reddick, Rosie Perez and Oscar Isaac are co-starring.
