Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the thriller The Words written and directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal and stars Bradley Cooper, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Ben Barnes, John Hannah, J.K. Simmons and Nora Arnezeder. The film’s music is composed by Marcelo Zarvos (The Good Shepherd, The Door in the Floor). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. For audio clips and the full album details, check out our soundtrack announcement. Also opening wide is the action thriller The Cold Light of Day directed by Mabrouk El Mechri and starring Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver. Spanish composer Lucas Vidal (The Raven) who has just been nominated in the Discovery of the Year category for the World Soundtrack Awards this week has composed the film’s score. ‘The Words’ Soundtrack Announced

Lakeshore Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the thriller The Words. The album features the film’s original score composed by Marcelo Zarvos (The Good Shepherd, Remember Me). The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 4, 2012 and physically on September 18. Audio clips from all tracks on the album can be checked out below. The Words is written and directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal and stars Bradley Cooper, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Ben Barnes, John Hannah, J.K. Simmons and Nora Arnezeder. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and has been picked up by CBS Films for domestic distribution. The thriller will be released nationwide on September 7.

Marcelo Zarvos to Score HBO’s Phil Spector Biopic

Marcelo Zarvos has been hired to score the upcoming and currently untitled HBO movie about Phil Spector. The film is written and directed by David Mamet (Glengarry Glenn Ross, The Untouchables) and stars Al Pacino as Spector and Helen Mirren as his defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden. The movie explores the client-attorney relationship between the legendary music producer and his attorney who represented Spector during his first trial for the murder of Lana Clarkson. Jeffrey Tambor, James Tolkan and Martin Jarvis are co-starring. Michael Hausman (Recount, The People vs. Larry Flynt) is producing the project while Barry Levinson is executive producing alongside Pacino and Mamet.  Zarvos has previously collaborated with Levinson a number of times, most recently on the sci-fi horror thriller The Bay, which is still awaiting a release date.

Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the fantasy epic John Carter directed by Andrew Stanton and starring Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Thomas Haden Church, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Mark Strong, James Purefoy and Bryan Cranston. The film’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. A separate article featuring interviews with Giacchino about his music for the film will be published shortly.

Also opening wide is the family comedy A Thousand Words directed by Brian Robbins and starring Eddie Murphy, Ariel Winter, Kerry Washington and Allison Janney. John Debney who previously worked with the director on the sci-fi comedy Meet Dave has written the score for the movie. No soundtrack album has been announced. Marcelo Zarvos to Score ‘The Words’

Marcelo Zarvos has been hired to score the thriller The Words. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Ben Barnes, John Hannah, J.K. Simmons and Nora Arnezeder. The thriller follows a successful writer who discovers he has to pay a price for stealing another man’s work. The movie is written and directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal who were both involved in writing the story for last year’s Tron Legacy. Michael Benaroya (Margin Call, The Romantics) is producing through Benaroya Pictures, alongside Animus Films’ Jim Young (Don McKay) and Serena Films’ Tatiana Kelly (Wristcutters: A Love Story).

Marcelo Zarvos Scoring ‘Friends with Kids’

Marcelo Zarvos has recently scored the comedy Friends with Kids. The movie marks the directorial debut of actress/writer Jennifer Westfeldt who also wrote the project’s screenplay. Zarvos previously scored the 2001 indie comedy Kissing Jessica Stein, which was written and produced by Westfeldt who also played the main character in the film. Friends with Kids stars Westfeldt, Adam Scott, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns. The film centers on a group of friends whose lives arechanged as the couples in the group begin to have children.

2011 Summer Television Music Roundup (Part 1)

With an increasing number of major TV shows premiering during the summer months, Film Music Reporter presents a listing of this summer’s original shows and their composers. Featured in Part 1 of the Summer TV Roundup are the original shows on the networks (ABC, NBC, CBS), as well as on USA and Showtime. Check back for Part 2 to appear on this page soon.

ABC:

Airing every Tuesday night on the network is the drama Combat Hospital. The show centers on a group of doctors and nurses from Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and other allied countries saving lives and limbs in a war zone military hospital modeled on a real facility in Afghanistan. Deborah Kara Unger, Michelle Borth, Elias Koteas, Terry Chen, Arnold Pinnock and Luke Mably are starring. The show’s music is composed by Edmund Butt (The Dark, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) and additional music is written by Samuel Sim (The Deep).

Marcelo Zarvos to Score ‘Steel Town’

Marcelo Zarvos has been hired to score the upcoming drama Steel Town. The project which was originally entitled Still I Rise stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Holly Hunter, Lance Reddick, Rosie Perez and Oscar Isaac. The movie centers on two mothers who channel frustration into action and join forces to transform an inner-city public school in Pittsburgh. The film is directed by Daniel Barnz who previously collaborated with the composer on this year’s teen romance Beastly. Barnz also co-wrote the project’s script with Brin Hill and Mark Johnson (Rain Man, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Notebook) is producing. Still I Rise is produced by Walden Media (The Chronicle of Narnia series) and will be distributed domestically by 20th Century Fox.

‘Too Big to Fail’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande has announced the details of the soundtrack release for the HBO movie Too Big to Fail. The album includes the original score by Marcelo Zarvos. The soundtrack will be released on July 12, 2011 and is now available to pre-order on Amazon. Too Big to Fail is directed by Curtis Hanson and stars William Hurt, Paul Giamatti, James Woods, Billy Crudup, Matthew Modine, Tony Shalhoub, Topher Grace, Kathy Baker, Bill Pullman, Michael O’Keefe and Cynthia Nixon. The film about the financial crisis of 2008 and the group of powerbrokers who decided the fate of the world’s economy in a matter of a few weeks premiered last month on HBO.

‘The Big C’ Soundtrack announced

Epic Records has announced a soundtrack release for the Showtime show The Big C. The album includes the show’s main title song Game Called Life by the Leftover Cuties, as well a suite from Marcelo Zarvos‘ score for the first season of the hit show. Other artists featured on the album are The Staple Singers, Sara Bareilles, Franz Ferdinand, Delta Spirit and Modest Mouse. Profits from sales of the soundtrack will reportedly be donated to Stand Up To Cancer, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. The album will be released on June 7, 2011, the same day as the show’s first season is released on Blu-Ray and DVD. To pre-order the soundtrack, visit Amazon and check out the audio clips below. The Big C stars Laura Linney as a suburban mom, who is diagnosed with cancer and tries to find the humor in the disease.
