Christopher Gunning has passed away at age 78. The British composer has written numerous scores for film and television over a four decade-spanning career. Among his best known credits is his score for Olivier Dahan’s 2007 biopic La Vie en rose, for which he received the (BAFTA) Anthony Asquith Award. He composed the music for the first nine seasons of the long-running TV show Agatha Christie’s Poirot, for which he was honored with a BAFTA TV Award. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Shrinking’ Soundtrack Album Released

WaterTower Music has released the first soundtrack album for the Apple TV+ original series Shrinking. The album features the original score from the show’s first season composed by Tom Howe (Ted Lasso, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Daisy Jones & The Six, Early Man, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women). Also included is the main title theme song Frightening Fishes (by Death Cab for Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard & Tom Howe), which has previously been released as a digital single. The soundtrack is now available to stream/download on Apple Music/iTunes, Amazon and most other major digital music services. Netflix announced today at Anime Japan that Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, Ip Man, Resident Evil: Vendetta) is scoring the streamer’s upcoming original anime series Ooku: The Inner Chambers. The show is based on the manga of the same title by Fumi Yoshinaga, directed by Noriyuki Abe (Bleach) and written by Rika Takasugi. The Studio Deen production is inspired by the historic women’s quarters of the Edo Castle and follows the nation’s women as they are forced to take up the central roles of authority in Edo society when a mysterious plague causes a rapid decline in the male population. Opening semi-wide in around 750 theaters is the British comedy drama The Lost King directed by Stephen Frears and starring Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan, Mark Addy and Harry Lloyd. Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Queen, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Queen) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last fall when the movie opened in the UK. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Travesía’ Album Announced

Milan Records has announced Travesía, a new album featuring music by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Little Buddha, Femme Fatale, Snake Eyes), curated by five-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel, 21 Grams, Amores Perros, Bardo, Biutiful). The album features twenty tracks handpicked by Iñárritu, including selections of the Sakamoto’s solo work such as Thousand Knives, the title track of the musician’s 1978 debut album. Also included is a new, never-before-heard mix of The Revenant Main Theme (written for Iñárritu’s 2015 feature) by Sakamoto’s long-time collaborator Alva Noto. Hollywood Records has released the first track from the soundtrack for the biographical drama Chevalier. Available to stream/download now on all major digital music services is Violin Concerto in G Major, Op. 8, No. 2: I. Allegro written by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, arranged by the film’s composer Kris Bowers (Bridgerton, King Richard, Green Book) and performed by Bowers, the London Contemporary Orchestra and violinist Randall Goosby. Redrocca has released a new soundtrack album for the ITV drama Endeavour. The album features newly recorded variations written by the show’s composer Matthew Slater (Grace) and performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra. Also included is Barrington Pheloung’s Theme from Inspector Morse (listen to the track below). Endeavour Variations is now available to stream/download on Amazon and any other major digital music services. A physical release is also expected. Sony Classical has previously released a soundtrack featuring Pheloung’s main theme and several classical pieces from the drama’s first seasons.
