Rob Simonsen has been tapped to score the upcoming Kickstarter-funded drama Wish I Was Here. The movie marks Zach Braff’s second directorial feature following the indie hit Garden State and stars himself, as well as Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Ashley Greene, Jim Parsons and Josh Gad. The film centers on a struggling actor, husband and father who is trying to find his identity and purpose in his mid-30s and winds up trying to home school his two children when his father can no longer afford to pay for private education. Braff has also co-written the screenplay with his brother Adam. Stacey Sher (Erin Brockovich, Django Unchained) and Michael Shamberg (Contagion, Get Shorty) are producing the project for their Double Feature Films production company. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Lone Survivor’ Soundtrack Announced

Metropolis Movie Music will release a soundtrack album for Peter Berg’s action drama Lone Survivor. The album features the film’s original music composed by Explosions in the Sky and Steve Jablonsky (Transformers, Ender’s Game). The post-rock band previously composed music for Berg’s Friday Night Lights and Jablonsky scored last year’s Battleship for the director. The soundtrack will be released digitally overseas on December 20, 2013 and in the U.S. on January 21, 2014. Visit Amazon to pre-order the album and to check out audio clips. Lone Survivor is written and directed by Berg and stars Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. The drama tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Alan Silvestri’s ‘Blown Away’ Score Released

Intrada Records has announced the world premiere soundtrack release for 1994 action thriller Blown Away directed by Stephen Hopkins and starring Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Bridges and Forest Whitaker. The album features the film’s original score composed and conducted by Alan Silvestri (The Avengers, Back to the Future, Forrest Gump). The composer incorporated brief segments of Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture into his music. Only one cue from the score was previously available. ‘Angelique’ Soundtrack Details

A soundtrack album will be released for the French period drama Angelique. The album features the film’s original score composed by Nathaniel Mechaly (Taken, Colombiana, The Grandmaster) and performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Angelique is directed by Ariel Zeitoun and stars Nora Arnezeder in the title role, alongside Gérard Lanvin, Tomer Sisley and David Kross. The movie is a remake of the film by the same name from 1964 based on the novel by based on the novel by Anne and Serge Golon about the beautiful feisty teenage heroine. Nathan Johnson is currently scoring the upcoming sci-fi action thriller Young Ones. The movie is set in a violent near-future where water has become the most precious resource on the planet and follows a 14-year-old boy forced to use his wits to survive. Thomas Newman to Be Honored at Palm Springs Film Festival

Thomas Newman will be honored with the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). The composer will be receiving his award for his music for John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr. Banks starring Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks and Colin Farrell. Newman has previously won the award in 2006 following his work for Cinderella Man and Jarhead. Past recipients of the Frederick Loewe Award include Mychael Danna, Alexandre Desplat, Danny Elfman, Howard Shore and Randy Newman. The Awards Gala will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Newman will be recognized at the event alongside Sandra Bullock, Bruce Dern, Matthew McConaughey, Steve McQueen, Julia Roberts and Lupita Nyong’o.

Varese Sarabande has announced the latest titles in the CD Club series. Among the titles is a deluxe edition for Star Trek: Nemesis, the tenth feature in the series and the final movie with the Next Generation crew, directed by Stuart Baird and starring Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Tom Hardy and Marina Sirtis. The album includes the world premiere release of the complete score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen, Planet of the Apes, Patton) who previously scored Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Final Frontier, First Contact and Insurrection. Nemesis marked his final score for the franchise. The soundtrack also features source music and alternate cues. LA, NY and Boston Film Critics Announce Winners of Best Music in Film 2013

A couple of major local critics associations have been announced their winners for this year’s movies. The Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis was honored by three organizations for its soundtrack produced by T Bone Burnett. As a side note, the film doesn’t feature an actual score and only one original song, which is why the LA Film Critics’ choice in the Best Music Score category is somewhat misleading. Virgin Records will release the official soundtrack album for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.
