Max Richter (The Leftovers, Taboo, Waltz with Bashir, Hostiles).has composed the original music for the upcoming HBO and RAI original series My Brilliant Friend (L’amica geniale). The show is co-written and directed by Saverio Costanzo (Private, The Solitude of Prime Numbers, Hungry Hearts) and stars Elisa Del Genio, Ludovica Nasti, Margherita Mazzucco and Gaia Girace. The drama is based on Elena Ferrante’s bestselling book of the same name and tells the story of a now-elderly woman who discovers the most important friend in her life seems to have disappeared without a trace. Premiering on Tuesday, September 4, is the FX original series Mayans MC created by Kurt Sutter & Elgin James and starring JD Pardo, Clayton Cardenas, Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Antonio Jaramillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Richard Cabral and Danny Pino. The show’s original music is composed by Bob Thiele Jr. who previously composed FX’s Sons of Anarchy. 20th Century Fox TV Records has released the first track from the soundtrack, Nunca performed by David Hidalgo & Los Refugios Tiernos, earlier this week. Also premiering on Tuesday is the USA original series The Purge created by James DeMonaco based on the movie franchise and starring Gabriel Chavarria, Lili Simmons, Lee Tergesen, Jessica Garza, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell, Hannah Emily Anderson and William Baldwin. Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool 2, 300, John Wick, Watchmen) is composing the show’s original music. Jeff Beal has recently recorded his score for the upcoming documentary The Biggest Little Farm. The film is directed by John Chester (Rock Prophecies, Euphoria) and follows the filmmaker and his wife Molly Chester, a culinary writer, who trade city life to start their own farm on a stretch of depleted soil outside Los Angeles. Chester is also producing the project with Sandra Keats who previously served as a co-producer and associate producer on the Beal-scored documentaries Generation Wealth and Last Call at the Oasis. Two new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this week:
Already playing in theaters nationwide since this past Wednesday is the historical thriller Operation Finale directed by Chris Weitz and starring Oscar Isaac, Ben Kingsley, Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Aronov, Ohad Knoller and Greta Scacchi. The film’s original music is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). Also opening wide is the sci-fi thriller Kin directed by Jonathan Baker & Josh Baker and starring Jack Reynor, Myles Truitt, Zoë Kravitz, Carrie Coon, Dennis Quaid and James Franco. The post-rock band Mogwai (The Returned, Before the Blood) has composed the film’s original music. Temporary Residence has released a soundtrack album featuring the band’s score. Sade has recorded the original song The Big Unknown for Steve McQueen’s upcoming heist thriller Widows. The track is co-written by herself and Ben Travers who also produced the song with Aaron Taylor Dean. The singer/songwriter has previously contributed an original song for Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, which was released earlier this year. Varese Sarabande has announced a soundtrack album for the David Lowery’s crime comedy The Old Man & the Gun. The album features the film’s original music composed by Daniel Hart who previously scored the director’s last three features Pete’s Dragon, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and A Ghost Story. Also included are three songs by The Kinks, Scott Walker and Jackson C. Frank. The soundtrack will be released physically on October 5, 2018 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.
