John Powell (The Bourne Identity, Wicked, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Happy FeetBoltDon’t Worry Darling, Migration, X-Men: The Last Stand) is set to score DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming sequel Shrek 5. The film is directed by Conrad Vernon (The Addams Family, Sausage Party) & Walt Dohrn (Trolls) and features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Zendaya, Skyler Gisondo and Marcello Hernandez. Chris Meledandri (Despicable Me, The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Gina Shay (Shrek Forever After) are producing the project. Powell has previously co-scored the original 2001 Shrek movie with Harry Gregson-Williams who composed the music for all three previous sequels. He also scored the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, the first two Kung Fu Panda movies & The Road to El Dorado (with Hans Zimmer) and Antz (with Gregson-Williams) for DreamWorks Animation, as well as several other animated features produced by Meledandri. Powell’s assignment was “announced” at a private Minions & Monsters screening last night at the Steven Spielberg Theater at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Shrek 5 will be released in theaters nationwide on June 30, 2027 by Universal Pictures.

Powell’s other recent projects include Illumination Entertainment’s Minions & Monsters, which will be released in theaters next Wednesday, July 1. He will also return to work on the second installment in Dean DeBlois’ How to Train Your Dragon live-action adaptation, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 11, 2027 by Universal Pictures.
