THR is reporting that Michael Penn (Girls, Boogie Nights, Masters of Sex, Sunshine Cleaning, The Last Kiss) is set to compose and perform original music for a sequel to last year’s Disney+ original movie Stargirl. He will also serve as the executive music producer on the film, which will be directed by Julia Hart (I’m Your Woman, Fast Color) and star Grace VanderWaal and Elijah Richardson. VanderWaal is also contributing new songs to the YA drama, which follows Stargirl’s journey out of Mica and into a bigger world of music, dreams and possibility. Hart is also co-writing the screenplay with Jordan Horowitz.

The Octopus Project who have previously scored the directors’ Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and Kid-Thing have composed the film’s original music. Composer Michael Penn (Girls, Masters of Sex, Boogie Nights, Sunshine Cleaning) is scoring the new NBC comedy drama Good Girls. The show is created by Jenna Bans and stars Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman, Matthew Lillard, Reno Wilson, Manny Montana, Lidya Jewett and Izzy Stannard. The series follows three suburban moms who get tired of trying to make ends meet and decide it’s time to stick up for themselves by robbing the local grocery store.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Opening in most theaters is DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby directed by Tom McGrath and featuring the voices of Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow and Miles Bakshi. The film’s original music is composed by Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, Gladiator, Inception, The Dark Knight) and Steve Mazzaro (Bullet to the Head). Also opening wide is the film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche and Michael Pitt. Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, Noah) and Lorne Balfe (The LEGO Batman Movie, Terminator Genisys) have composed the film’s original music. A separate soundtrack featuring Mansell’s music was originally set for release today by Lakeshore Records, but appears to have been canceled or postponed indefinitely.
‘Carrie Pilby’ Soundtrack Details
The Orchard will release a soundtrack album for the romantic comedy Carrie Pilby. The album features the songs from the movie by artists including Disclosure & Lorde, Louise Goffin, Moses Jordan, Chauncey Jacks & more. Also included are six tracks from the movie’s original score composed by Michael Penn (Girls, Masters of Sex, Boogie Nights). The soundtrack will be released digitally on March 31, 2017 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Carrie Pilby is directed by Susan Johnson and stars Bel Powley, Nathan Lane, Gabriel Byrne, Vanessa Bayer, Colin O’Donoghue, Jason Ritter and William Moseley.
Michael Penn to Score Shana Feste’s ‘Boundaries’
Michael Penn is composing the original music for the upcoming comedy drama Boundaries. The film is written and directed by Shana Feste (Country Strong, Endless Love, The Greatest) and stars Vera Farmiga, Christopher Plummer, Lewis MacDougall, Bobby Cannavale, Kristen Schaal, Peter Fonda, Christopher Lloyd and Dolly Wells. The movie centers on a single mother who, along with her awkward 14-year-old son, is forced to drive her estranged, care-free, pot-dealing father across country after he’s kicked out of yet another nursing home.
Michael Penn Scoring Susan Johnson’s ‘Carrie Pilby’
Michael Penn is composing the music for the upcoming indie romantic comedy Carrie Pilby. The film marks the directorial debut of producer Susan Johnson (Mean Creek, Eye of the Hurricane) and stars Bel Powley, Nathan Lane, Gabriel Byrne, Vanessa Bayer, Colin O’Donoghue, Jason Ritter and William Moseley. The movie is based on Caren Lissner’s best-selling 2003 novel and follows an awkward and isolated 19-year-old genius who is challenged to put her convictions to the test by venturing out on to the NYC dating scene.
‘Girls’ Vol. 3 Soundtrack Details
Interscope Records will release a new soundtrack album for the HBO original series Girls. The album features a selection of songs from the show by artists including Ellie Goulding, Bleachers and Grimes, St. Vincent, BØRNS, Lucy Rose, Casey Veggies, Matrimony, Christine and the Queens & more. Also included are two tracks from the show’s original score composed by Michael Penn (Masters of Sex, Boogie Nights). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, February 19 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. Fueled by Ramen and Atlantic Records have previously released the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 soundtracks fro the series. Girls created by Lena Dunham and executive produced by Judd Apatow follows a close group of twenty-somethings as they chart their lives in New York City.
