Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Scream 4 reunites director Wes Craven with composer Marco Beltrami. Two different soundtracks have been released for the horror sequel. A score album featuring Beltrami’s music will be released next Tuesday and a song soundtrack with two score tracks is available on Lakeshore Records. Also opening is the animated feature Rio, which already opened in several foreign territories last weekend generating the highest grossing international opening of the year. The film’s score is by John Powell and Sergio Mendes served as the movie’s executive music producer. Rio‘s music team also includes percussionist Carlinhos Brown, lyricist Siedah Garrett, pop singer Taio Cruz and The Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am. A score album will be released next week by Varese Sarabande and the official soundtrack featuring the film’s songs is already out on Interscope Records.

‘Rio’ Score Album Details

Varese Sarabande Records has revealed the details for the score album of the upcoming animated feature Rio. The album contains 18 tracks of John Powell’s original score for the film, as well as one track by Brazilian musician/songwriter Carlinhos Brown and Mikael Mutti. The soundtrack will be released on April 19, 2011. To order the score album, visit Amazon. As previously reported, a separate song album will be released on April 5 by Interscope Records and includes songs from the film by Sergio Mendez, will.i.am and Jamie Foxx.

John Powell Confirmed to Score ‘The Lorax’

A press release from Universal Pictures has confirmed this week that John Powell is writing the music for the upcoming animated feature The Lorax. The film based on the book by Dr. Seuss centers around a boy who searches for a way to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. He comes across the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. The film’s voice talent includes Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Rob Riggle and Betty White. The movie is directed by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul (writers of Horton Hears a Who! and Despicable Me), as well as Chris Renaud (co-director of Despicable Me). The Lorax is the third feature from Illumination Entertainment after last year’s surprise hit Despicable Me (with music by Heitor Pereira and Pharrell Williams) and the upcoming Hop (scored by Christopher Lennertz). Powell has previously scored Blue Sky Studios’ Horton Hears a Who!, which was produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and was also based on a Dr. Seuss book.

Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Battle: Los Angeles starring Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena and Michelle Rodriquez and directed by Jonathan Liebesman is expected to be the number one movie of the weekend at the domestic box office. The film’s music is written by Brian Tyler. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album with Tyler’s score (click here to check out our announcement of the soundtrack). Also opening today is Simon Wells’ Mars Needs Moms from Walt Disney Pictures. The film marks John Powell’s first out of four scores for animated movies to be released this year. ‘Rio’ Soundtrack Status

Two soundtrack albums for the upcoming animated film Rio have been announced. Varese Sarabande Records will release John Powell’s original score from the movie on April 19, 2011. We will be posting a new article when the cover and tracklist will be published. Earlier this week, Fox Music and Interscope Records have announced a separate soundtrack album featuring songs from the movie. Artists featured on the soundtrack include Sergio Mendez, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx and Mikael Mutti. The album will be released on April 5, 2011.

‘Mars Needs Moms’ Soundtrack announced

Walt Disney Records will release a soundtrack album for the upcoming animated film Mars Needs Moms. The soundtrack features about 50 minutes of the original score by Academy Award-nominated composer John Powell. The album will be released digitally on March 8, 2011. To listen to audio clips from the soundtrack, visit Amazon. Mars Needs Moms centers on young boy named Milo, who gains a deeper appreciation for his mom after Martians come to Earth to take her away. The film is directed by Simon Wells (The Prince of Egypt, The Time Machine) and produced by Robert Zemeckis. The movie’s voice talent includes Dan Fogler, Mindy Sterling and Joan Allen. John Powell wins Annie Award for ‘How to Train Your Dragon’

John Powell has won the Annie Award in the Music in a Feature Production category for his score for Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon at tonight’s Annie Award ceremony in Los Angeles. The other contenders in the category were Sylvain Chomet (The Illusionist), David Hirschfelder (Legend of the Guardians), Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek Forever After) and Pharrell Williams & Heitor Pereira for Despicable Me. The award is Powell’s first win as a solo composer, having previously won for his collaboration with Harry Gregson-Williams on the original Shrek and his collaboration with Hans Zimmer on Kung Fu Panda.

Hans Zimmer confirmed to score Superman and new Pirates movie

According to Thompson on Hollywood, Hans Zimmer revealed in a recent interview on Tuesday’s Inception DVD and Blu-Ray release party that he is going to score the upcoming Zack Snyder-directed adaptation of Superman. The movie will be produced by Christopher Nolan and is set for a holiday 2012 release. Zimmer also talked about his thoughts on scoring Superman to NBC San Diego.

Hans Zimmer is also set to start scoring the fourth part in the Pirates of the Caribbean series in January of next year. In Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too. The movie reunites producer Jerry Bruckheimer with cast members Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush and adds the new director Rob Marshall and cast members Ian McShane, Richard Griffiths, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench. The Walt Disney Pictures movie is set to open on May 20, 2011.

Music by Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe

Dreamworks Animation’s latest movie features a score by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe, as well as numerous popular songs. A soundtrack album featuring about 30 minutes of score, as well as most of the songs used in the movie has been released by Lakeshore Records. To listen to clips, check out Amazon or iTunes. The movie contains roughly 50 minutes of score including a very nice arrangement of the main themes during the end credits which has surprisingly been left off the soundtrack album.
