Five new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Already playing in theaters since Wednesday is the action adventure comedy Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas and Bobby Cannavale. The film’s original music is composed by Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier & Civil War, Big Hero 6, Kong: Skull Island, Wreck-It-Ralph, X-Men: First Class). Also now playing is the movie musical The Greatest Showman directed by Michael Gracey and starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) have written the film’s original songs and John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, The Jungle Book) & Joseph Trapanese (Oblivion, Straight Outta Compton) have composed the movie’s original score. Nathan Larson is reteaming with director Jesse Peretz on the upcoming comedy drama Juliet, Naked. The movie starring Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke and Chris O’Dowd is based on the novel of the same title by Nick Hornby and tells the story of a woman and her unlikely transatlantic romance with once revered, now faded, singer-songwriter. Tamara Jenkins (The Savages, Slums of Beverly Hills), Jim Taylor (Sideways, Election), Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams, Sneakers) and Evgenia Peretz wrote the screenplay.
Deutsche Grammophon has released the original song How Shall a Sparrow Fly from Scott Cooper’s western Hostiles. The track is written and performed by Ryan Bingham who previously co-wrote the Academy Award-winning song The Weary Kind from Cooper’s Crazy Heart. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album for the indie comedy The Polka King. The album features the songs from the movie performed by the Jack Black Polka Band. The soundtrack will be released digitally next month and is now available for pre-order on
Lyle Workman has recently recorded his score for the upcoming romantic comedy Overboard. The film is directed by Rob Greenberg (How I Met Your Mother) and stars Anna Faris, Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria, John Hannah, and Swoosie Kurtz. The movie is a remake of the 1987 feature of the same title (scored by Alan Silvestri) and follows a spoiled playboy from one of Mexico’s wealthiest families who is thrown overboard his yacht and becomes the target of revenge from his mistreated employe.
The full details of the soundtrack album for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread have been announced. The album features the film’s original music composed by Jonny Greenwood who previously collaborated with Anderson on There Will Be Blood, The Master and Inherent Vice. The composer recorded his score with the London Contemporary Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The soundtrack will be released digitally on January 12, 2018 and physically (on CD and vinyl) in the following weeks. Listen to a track after the jump. Königskinder Music has released a soundtrack album for the German comedy drama Dieses bescheuerte Herz. The album features the film’s original music composed by Golden Globe nominee Johnny Klimek (Cloud Atlas, Run Lola Run, One Hour Photo, Sense8, The International). Paul Cantelon is scoring the upcoming documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts. The film is directed by Susan Lacy (Spielberg) and takes a look at the life, work, activism and controversies of Academy Award-winning actress and fitness tycoon, Jane Fonda. Lacy is also producing the project with Jessica Levin and Emma Pildes. Cantelon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, W., em>Everything Is Illuminated, The Other Boleyn Girl) has previously contributed music to the Lacy-produced American Masters production Woody Allen: A Documentary.
Rupert Gregson-Williams has been tapped to score the upcoming comedy The Happytime Murders. The film is directed by Brian Henson (The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island) and stars Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Elizabeth Banks and Joel McHale. The movie centers on two clashing detectives, one human and the other a puppet, who are forced to work together to find the killer who’s murdering the former cast of “The Happytime Gang,” a classic puppet show. Longtime Henson puppeteer Bill Barretta performs Phil Phillips, the puppet detective.
