Weekly Film Music Roundup (November 4, 2011)

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the caper comedy Tower Heist directed by Brett Ratner and starring Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena, Alan Alda, Gabourey Sidibe, Judd Hirsch and Nina Arianda. The film’s score is composed by Christophe Beck. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score this past Tuesday. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson and starring Kal Penn, John Cho, Neil Patrick Harris, Patton Oswalt and Tom Lennon. William Ross has written the sccore for the movie. A score album will be released on November 15 by Varese Sarabande (click here for the full details). Three movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters this week is Dreamworks Animation’s Puss in Boots directed by Chris Miller and featuring the voice talent of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton. The film’s music is composed by Henry Jackman. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring Jackman’s music, as well as two tracks by Rodrigo y Gabriela this past Tuesday. Also opening wide is the sci-fi thriller In Time directed by Andrew Niccol and starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy and Alex Pettyfer. The film’s score is composed by Craig Armstrong. A soundtrack album featuring Armstrong’s music has been released digitally earlier this week by Lakeshore Records. ‘World Soundtrack Awards’ Winners Announced

The World Soundtrack Academy announced the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2011 at last night’s  closing event of the 38th Ghent International Film Festival. Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2011. Hans Zimmer received the award for Best Orginal Film Score of the Year for Inception and Randy Newman was awarded for his song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3 in the Best Original Song Written for Film category. Alex Heffes received the Discovery of the Year Award for The First Grader & The Rite. The Public Choice Award went to A.R. Rahman for the film 127 hours. Among the composers in attendance at the event were Giorgio Moroder who was the recipient of the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award,  as well as Gabriel Yared, Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Alexandre Desplat, Alex Heffes  and Abel Korzeniowski.

Hans Zimmer to Sit Out the 2012 Oscar Race

According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hans Zimmer said at the Ghent Film Festival, where he was attendance for a performance of some of his scores at last night’s World Soundtrack Awards ceremony, that he will be sitting out this year’s Academy Awards competition. The composer mentioned that his decision is partly related to the death of  his longtime publicist Ronni Chasen, to whom the concert was dedicated, but he also mentioned his desire to just focus on his upcoming work (which includes the highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises). Zimmer has written music for five movies released this year, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Kung Fu Panda 2 (co-composed with John Powell), The Dilemma (co-composed with Lorne Balfe), Rango and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, with especially the latter two having been considered serious contenders for the awards race.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend. Apart from Paranormal Activity 3, which is expected to top the weekend box office and doesn’t feature any original music, the following three movies are receiving a wide release:

The Three Musketeers directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, Matthew MacFayden, Luke Evans, Mads Mikkelsen, Juno Temple and Ray Stevenson features music by Paul Haslinger. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as Take That’s end title song When We Were Young has been released earlier this week by Milan Records. Also opening wide is the action spoof Johnny English Reborn starring Oliver Parker and starring Rowan Atkinson, Rosamunde Pike, Dominic West and Gillian Anderson. The film’s score is written by Ilan Eshkeri. A soundtrack CD including the score will be released on November 1 by Varese Sarabande. The album is also already available digitally on iTunes. Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the remake of Footloose directed by Craig Brewer and stars Kenny Wormaid, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid and Andie MacDowell. Atlantic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s songs by artists including Blake Shelton, Zac Brown, The Smashing Pumpkins, Victoria Justice & Hunter Hayes and Big & Rich. For audio clips and more information about the album, visit our previous article. The film’s score is written by Deborah Lurie and no separate score release has been announced.

Also opening wide is the horror prequel The Thing directed by Matthijs van Heijingen Jr. and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen and Joel Edgerton. Marco Beltrami has written the music for the film. A soundtrack album featuring Beltrami’s score has been released by Varese Sarabande earlier this week. Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Expecting to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi action film Real Steel directed by Shawn Levy and starring Hugh Jackman, Kevin Durand, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Hope Davis. The movie’s score is composed by Danny Elfman. A soundtrack album featuring his score will be released on November 1 by Varese Sarabande (click here for the details). A separate soundtrack featuring songs from the movie by artists including Bad Meets Evil, Beastie Boys and Foo Fighters, as well as one track from Elfman’s score has been released on Interscope Records. Also opening wide is the drama The Ides of March directed by George Clooney and starring Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Max Minghella and Jeffrey Wright. The film’s music is written by Alexandre Desplat. As reported on this page last month, Varese Sarabande has announced a score album to be released on November 1. More details are expected to be revealed soon and will be posted on this site.

Alberto Iglesias to Receive Hollywood Film Composer Award

Alberto Iglesias is the recipient of the Hollywood Film Composer Award at this year’s Hollywood Film Festival for his scores for the John Le Carre film adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Tom Hardy and Pedro Almadovar’s The Skin I Live In starring Antonio Banderas. Iglesias will collect his statuette at the Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony, which will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Oct. 24. Iglesias is having one of his busiest years of his film scoring career to date with three movies being released in 2011 (The Monk being the third one).

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Jim Sheridan’s horror thriller Dream House starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts features an original score by composer John Debney. Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack CD including Debney’s score on October 11. The album is also already available to download on iTunes. Also opening wide is the comedy drama 50/50 directed by Jonathan Levine and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anjelica Huston, Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard. The score from the movie is composed by Michael Giacchino. No soundtrack album has been announced so far. The movie about a 25-year old guy’s struggle to beat cancer is released by Summit Entertainment. For more information about the film, visit the official movie website.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the the family movie Dolphin Tale directed by Charles Martin Smith and starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick, Jr., Kris Kristofferson and Nathan Gamble. The film’s score is written by Mark Isham. Varese Sarabande will be releasing the soundtrack album including Isham’s music on October 11, 2011. Also opening this weekend is the drama Moneyball directed by Bennett Mikler and starring Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Chris Pratt. The film’s music is composed by Mychael Danna. A soundtrack album featuring Danna’s score, as well as two songs by Kerris Dorsey and This Will Destroy You has been released earlier this week on Madison Gate Records.
